William Leon Osbourn a 45 year old Clarendon truck driver died en route to Clarendon Clinic after his car swerved off Highway 287 two miles west of Lelia Lake. Doctors and patrolmen say he likely had a heart attack while driving alone. Johnnie Vieck of Clarendon and G P Moore of Amarillo witnessed the truck following Osbourn’s vehicle.
A fire destroyed three business units at Sixth and Carolina injuring Jack Melson a 23 year old auto shop owner with a leg in a cast. Firefighters faced strong winds as Jim and John Harms pulled Melson from the blaze and local officials estimated nearly $30 000 in damages. Melson was hospitalized with burns including a possible third degree on his right arm. The three businesses owned by the Harms brothers and Mr Briley were in a single building owned by the San Jacinto Baptist Church which plans to rebuild the site. The blaze began shortly before 3 pm and shut power in the area.
Sen. Theodore G Bilbo recovering from January 20 jaw operation was pronounced completely free of malignant growth effects, removed in a previous operation, in New Orleans.
Four year old Phillip Elkins missing since 3:30 p.m. was found near midnight walking from the Paramount Theater. Deputies and highway patrol joined a city wide search after he was last seen at 24th and Polk with a toy pistol while playing in the Furr Food Store. Phillip is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Elkins, president of Texas M M Company.
A noon collision two miles west of Hedley injures seven, with 5-year-old Larrel Jewett of Memphis in critical condition at Clarendon Clinic from a fractured skull. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Jewett, suffer serious injuries, along with four others. The crash occurred when a 1941 Mercury sedan and a Model A collided head on near 1 15 pm as one car attempted a left turn. Ambulances from Clarendon Hedley and Memphis transported the injured to the Clarendon Clinic.
Partly cloudy with decreasing winds and colder temperatures for Amarillo and vicinity on Wednesday. Thursday brings clouds and possible snow flurries in Panhandle and South Plains with continued cold. Temperatures yesterday reached 72 at 4 P.M., low 46s to 47, sunrise 7:48 A.M. and sunset 6:13 P.M.
The last minute rush for poll taxes continues as 575 were paid yesterday. The total now stands at 6 218, surpassing the 1945 off election year total of 5 132. Three days remain for payment of poll taxes.
