A car crushed between an interurban and a West End Street car at Jackson Street and Polk Avenue left one man dead and another fatally injured. About twenty to twenty four passengers narrowly escaped with serious harm in the January 27 Houston wreck reported by the Associated Press.
Frank Cole was made permanent director of the prohibition enforcement, with Henson named chief of field forces under Cole. Republican leaders conferred with Commissioner Haynes about consolidating two divisions at El Paso and Dallas while keeping Texas headquarters. A separate crash on Jackson Street killed Benjamin Russo and severely injured George Horace field as an interurban and a touring car collided, causing a fire and panicked crowd.
Dispatches from Essen report complete railway disorganization in the occupied area due to French intervention and the walkout of German railway employees. Trains largely halted or delayed, block signals confused, crowbars used to force switches, and frequent derailments. Local merchants largely boycott French and Belgian nationals.
Two persons were seriously injured at noon today when street car strikers clashed with supporters over conduct of their leaders amid a debate by the new strike committee. Police were called as the fight escalated.
Doorn January 27 former German Emperor William marked his sixty fourth birthday with a grand reception at his chateau. Attending were Crown Prince Frederick William Prince Henry and Duchess of Brunswick Dutch Utrecht governor and local nobles with their women. An Associated Press report noted William appeared in low spirits while his wife Princess Hermine complained Doorn was dull and wished to return to Germany.
Lausanne, Jan 27. Allies ratified the open door in Turkey through a declaration read at the Near Eastern conference. The text states Turkey is not obliged to follow the council on Ottoman debt when considering new or extended concessions. Ambassador Child flagged a conflicting clause in a prior draft about consulting the council, and the declaration asserts Turkey preserves sovereign rights and remains free to act under its own responsibility.
In Washington on January 27 the Senate opened debate on Europe and U.S. ties. Senators Owen Reed and Oddie discussed France and Belgium moving into the Ruhr to pressure reparations, with Owen opposing the invasion on moral grounds and Reed urging neutrality. Reed cited U.S. history in Belgium and France and stressed Germany’s alleged default while warning against rearming camps.

The Bethlehem Kawanna and Midvale Steel merger was ruled an unlawful restraint of trade by the Federal Trade Commission. Forty six corporations are charged in a complaint alleging a general consolidation plan to restrict steel supplies north of the Potomac and east of Buffalo and Johnstown. Bethlehem would issue 27,050,000 in new stock to Midvale holders, creating a holding company that would control three integrated steel groups with holdings in mining, transport, and production from raw materials to finished products.
Waco Texas January 27 release tonight of two suspects held for investigation and granting of bond to Everett Smith through habeas corpus proceedings emptied the city jail of all persons held in connection with the murder of W B Holt and Mrs Ethel Denecamp last Friday night. Officers said no new clues were available as of tonight, with a habeas corpus hearing set for Tuesday to reveal any evidence against Smith.
Paul Odor of The Daily News advertising department was the first Texan to claim a WDAP radio message prize at Clarke hotel Chicago. The contest offers a Protector radio tube to the first sender from each state province or ship, with a Ford car chance for all winners. Over 2000 telegrams reached the station within an hour of the broadcast as the event unfolded.
Washington January 27. A debt funding commission proposed final settlement of Britain's 62 year old debt to the United States with 9 percent interest for ten years and 3 12 percent thereafter. Amortization would be 0.5 percent annually, with Britain retiring parts of the debt as finances permit. Interest would be 4 1/2 percent from loan date to funding effectiveness, averaging slightly under 4 percent overall, similar to the treasury's current average on Liberty bonds.

A telegram from Baltimore reports the death of Rev. W. B. Kendall a widely known Baptist minister from Texas who had gone to Baltimore for treatment. Kendall recently resigned the Belton church pastorate due to failing health.
Ten bodies are recovered from the wreckage of the Mexican Eagle Oil Company's tank steamer San Leonardo after a blast at the dock on the lower Panuco river. Twelve crew members, all of Mexican nationality, are still missing from a 45 man crew.
