In May 1961 Alan Shepard became the first American in space in a 15 minute weightless flight. The Rome tour group of Amarillo residents savored the milestone as U.S. morale rose while Moscow dismissed moon plans and touted Venus probes.
Chick OMalley, veteran Amarillo Giants manager, plans a yearlong baseball beef union. Ideas include overprinting tickets with Texas Beef Is Best and a ceremony featuring Panhandle steaks at a game. Targets include a televised game with a ceremonial beef presentation and possible stops in Baltimore or San Francisco.
The best dressed people in the Panhandle were the Hereford Breeders at their annual dinner last night. Fashions were new for both men and women and across ages with wide lapels and muted stripes noted on attendees including Tomie Potts of Memphis. A symphony concert reportedly accompanied the evening, and comparisons were drawn between cattle folks and the symphony crowd for style and taste. Eleven year old Dean Herron brought his entire $75 savings to the Oakland County Animal Shelter auction in Pontiac to reclaim his three Shetland ponies that escaped from a Lyon Township farm after a snowmobile tore a fence. Deputies had spent six hours recapturing them. The boy had bought the ponies last summer with earnings from scrubbing floors.
The White House released a state by state breakdown showing $5 billion in general revenue sharing to be distributed to states and cities on a population basis. California would receive $59 million while Alaska would get $8.5 million, with 52 percent kept by states and 48 percent passed to city governments.
Washington UPI The board of governors of the new U S Postal Service voted to request rate increases to achieve a one cent first class stamp by mid May The service will submit a recommended rate package to the independent rate commission Blount has pushed for a two cent first class hike and a one third percent rise in other mail categories The earliest implementation could be in the second week of May if approved before a 90 day deadline automatic rates would apply temporarily 10 days after that deadline
At the Texas Capitol on Tuesday lawmakers debated what they call a crisis in confidence as a federal stock fraud case dominates discussions. A public hearing was planned on major aims while 20 legislators signed disclosure statements urging others to follow. Representative Curtis Graves floated a possible move to remove Speaker Gus Mutscher, contingent on the stock fraud case status.
A January blizzard battered the eastern Midwest from the upper Great Lakes to the southern Appalachians. Winds up to 65 mph caused snow drifts, road closures in northern Lower Michigan, and a 13 county travel ban. A Kent Lake chain reaction left 20+ injured in 40 car pileup near Kent Lake, Michigan. An unoccupied Ohio beach house was ripped from its foundations by Lake Erie winds. Snow belts near lakes Erie and Ontario may add up to 12 inches. Thousands of students remained home as schools closed or delayed.
The sun has shone over Amarillo for 24 of the first 26 days of 1971 with fair skies through tonight. A rise in cloudiness and warmer temperatures are forecast for tomorrow with a low near 30 and a high in the mid 60s. Winds from the west at 10 to 20 mph.
Amarillo city officials were invited to testify before the House Appropriations Committee in Austin regarding the Texas Air Control Board. W. W. Nicklaus and Dan Burleson were listed for appearance tied to prior Amarillo hearings on zinc smelter emissions and required reductions. The ACB seeks 229,964 for 1972, while the Budget Board suggests 34,704 after transfers to Health Department.
Ben Keck reports Amarillo hosts the 1971 Stock Show with 628 entries across 30 classes and 13 000 dollars in premiums. Four days featured Quarter Horse performances, halter judging, youth classes, and cutting horse events surpassing Denver’s Western National Stock Show in size, prompting officials to call it the biggest Amarillo show ever. Glen L. Casey, the show superintendent, says the city may gain a national reputation as a horse capital.
Today at 1 p.m. Panhandle Hereford Breeders present a stock show sale with cattle cataloged for bidding. At 8 p.m. RCA Rodeo Coliseum hosts the rodeo events showcasing local and regional competitors.
Amarillo business executives acted as livestock buyers for a day at the Amarillo Stock Show. The auction opened with a $2 000 bid for the 1,215 pound Charolais Angu s crossbreed grand champion steer exhibited by Pam Hullinger of Harris Missouri. The Amarillo Championship Club, with 31 firms and individuals, topped the sale as Sears Roebuck Co of Amarillo bid 2 50 per pound for the grand champion Hampshire barrow.
