President Kennedy fielded 38 minutes of questions on live television in the first presidential news conference at the State Department. He opened with three announcements including the release of two American fliers by the Russians and kept a calm, composed demeanor throughout.
About 130 attendees at the European Jet Holiday meeting at the Drift Inn YMCA learned two Boeing 707s are reserved for the April 21 departure. Mike Alford of Unitours, Inc. outlined a $99 tour through nine European countries with hotels, transport, most meals, tips, and a courier, with groups split to ease reservations.
The Amarillo Stock Show ends today with lambs swine and junior steer sales. Auction lambs begin at 10 a.m. in the Old Arena followed by the swine sale at 11 a.m. The final event is the steer sale at 2 p.m.
An all male jury of twelve will begin testimony in 121st District Court as Texas seeks a guilty verdict for William Gerald Miller 27 in the Nov 22 1959 pistol slaying of his wife Barbara 24 in Amarillo.
The Portuguese liner Santa Maria with about 600 passengers, seized by rebels, sails toward Angola as U.S. Navy ships and a Neptune patrol plane monitor and standby for possible interception. Rebel captain Henrique Galvao refused a return voyage, plans possible talks, while U.S. forces consider long-range options including the Seawolf submarine.
The House Democratic leadership postponed the Rules Committee revamp vote to next Tuesday amid tensions with Republican Leader Halleck who accuses Kennedy of cabinet level interference. Rayburn seeks a bigger Democratic majority on the panel to push Kennedy's legislative program.
President Kennedy announced that Russia freed two U S crewmen from an RB47 reconnaissance bomber shot down over the Arctic last July. Captains John R McKone of Topeka Kansas and Freeman B Olmstead of Elmira New York were handed to U S authorities, a step Kennedy called a major obstacle removed in Cold War tensions. Moscow framed the act as a sincere desire to improve relations.
Two American airmen freed by the Soviet Union after six months in prison arrived in Amsterdam on Thursday and departed for the United States about 3 a.m. after a brief stop.

Amarillo reports sun for 25 days straight in 1951 with comparative dawn readings at 1 am. The data shows wind speeds from Houston Dallas Oklo cities varying from 4 to 8 MPH and visibility between 6 and 15 miles noting clear to partly cloudy conditions.
A three member task force urged President Kennedy to affirm the dollar’s value and avoid exchange controls. They recommended removing tax incentives for private U.S. investment abroad and reducing duty free tourists imports. The report also urges steps to boost exports and enlist allies in financing free world defense and aid.
President Kennedy ordered no wholesale budget overhauls and directed minimal changes to the Eisenhower framework. At a White House briefing with Dillon Bell and Heller, Bell issued a directive to limit major changes to a small number of items.

A killer ice storm swept from Oklahoma into Texas killing seven people and causing widespread traffic jams. Sleet freezing rain and snow pounded the north and central regions while temperatures remained bitter elsewhere. Highways were kept open by highway crews who fought snow drifts and spread sand and salt. Weather relief not expected until Friday with more cold air forecast for the weekend.
A 12:42 p.m. Sunday blaze gutted two rooms of the Amarillo George Autry printing firm saddling a loss of art and memories. The fire erased Autry family paintings by Ben Carlton Mead and Sahula Dyke and damaged works by Harold Bugbee while leaving a smoky, damp odor and scorched keepsakes. Autry's descendants recall the artist and cowboy, noting the tragedy comes a year after his death.
Dear Editor laments urging purchase of American-made items despite lower import prices. A neighbor mocks the idea as a sacrifice for thrifty people who favor cheap imports over patriotism. He notes buying a $60 imported camera while Uncle Sam spends billions overseas without returns.
