Wheeler grows by area and people after annexing territory, totaling 1,252 residents. At a chamber banquet 183 attendees highlight a high turnout, with Wheeler paving 42 blocks in 1955. Hereford expects about 800 attendees for its banquet. Harry Wofford is named chamber president.
A Texline drug store fire began at 8 AM and ended by noon but prompted swift salvage by locals. Firefighters from Clayton and Dalhart joined residents in moving damaged merchandise, clearing debris, and serving coffee, turning a near total loss into a partial one thanks to community help.
The underground report says Braniff and TWA interchange will be cancelled within 30 days removing the last first class TWA schedule from Amarillo. The route is reduced from a coast to coast service to a transcontinental milk run served by second class.
Third indoor performance at Fair Park Coliseum drew 160 cowboys from western states competing for over 16 000 dollars in prize money. Beutler Morgan Rodeo produced salty stock as riders faced brutal bulls and broncs with Eddie Quaid narrowly beating Jim Shoulders and Ted Warhol for top bull riding honors.
Joe Chase won first in saddle bronc as George Williams and Jackie Wright followed. Don Fedderson set a fast steer wrestling time of 5.3 seconds, two tenths from Bill Lowe's pace. Buck Boyce, Ray Wharton and others battled in bareback events with tight finishes. Jake Bogard clocked 15.2 seconds in calf roping, while Jim Shoulders rode Just Right for third.
Attention turns to horses at the Tri-State Fairgrounds as 110 horses from five states compete in 160 entries in the Park Coliseum. Today includes FFA and 4 H judging events and a rodeo tonight.
Judging events at the Coliseum proceed with a full day plan including a.m. halter and 4-H FFA grass and livestock judging. Officials tout the fair as the best stock show in the Golden Spread and free to all exhibitors and attendees. Notables include Hank Wisecamp of Alamosa and Judge Jack Tumley of Sonora.
President Eisenhower said he is sold on a long term foreign aid program and will fight for it in Congress. His remarks at a news conference rebut reports that the administration was moving away from the plan.
President Eisenhower says Congress will not appropriate foreign aid funds more than a year ahead as bipartisan opposition grows. He urges bipartisan action with the executive branch to show world allies that the U S will finish what it starts. Knowland and George have led opposition in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The reserve champion sale bull collapsed and died an hour before the Panhandle Hereford Breeders auction. Despite the loss, bidders packed the new Fair Grounds arena as 750 attended. The day yielded mixed results with 49 purebred Herefords averaging $397 and five females at $302. The top price went to J. P. Zato Heir 2nd at $1,300. The champion sale bull TP Larry Mixer 5th netted $1,035. The champion female TP Larry Ann 66th sold for $350, and Drs. Betty Donnamo figure among reserve awards.
U S Trust and Guaranty Co. continued operating from July to mid December due to an unusual delay in insurance commission procedures. No license was on file for the firm during this period and officials indicated the status was being reviewed.
A commission lawyer told Senate investigators that U. S. Trust and many firms kept doing business after May 31 while the board updated its records. He said it was common for companies to operate beyond renewal deadlines and noted U. S. Trust Guaranty and U. S. Life, an affiliate, continued unlicensed after July 1.
Weather notes report Amarillo enjoyed sunshine for 24 days straight in 1956. Readings at 3 30 p m show varied conditions with Houston and Dallas listing cloudy skies and wind speeds while Amarillo records partly cloudy conditions and light visibility.
Police report two more 14 or 15 year old boys confessed to taking part in last weekend’s vandalism. The group, including five youths from Stephen F. Austin Junior High, planted bombs near a pump motor and the school principal’s office after buying firecrackers for use on mailboxes. Two other youths were exonerated, while one refused to sign statements despite parental guidance.
Potter County opens five poll tax sub-stations with special deputies at Castleberry Drug Amarillo Police Station Pantex Plant Northwest Texas Hospital Bushland and more. South Amarillo residents in Randall County may use the Randall County tax office until 5 30 p m with noon hours. Deadline for payment is Tuesday. Exemptions may apply to those turning 21 or aged 60 before Jan 1 1955. Armed forces members are not eligible for exemptions this year. Texans at Amarillo Air Force Base must pay where they lived when they entered service.
Mostly cloudy conditions expected across Amarillo and surrounding area with a chance of widely scattered thunderstorms by Thursday night. The high will reach 55 and the low 25 with a cooler Friday following an overnight clearing.
Texas Highway 66 Association members meet in Amarillo to urge the state to place Highway 66 underground along the present route near Amarillo Air Force Base. They oppose rerouting and favor a tunnel beneath the field as less costly than changing the path. The annual gathering at Neal's Charcoal Broiler drew about 35 people with reports from national officers and Amarillo officials. Bill Knight named a committee to push the tunnel project led by S. M. Clayton.
