Judge Ivy E. Duncan and Carl Smith urged Panhandle dust bowl counties to oversubscribe Red Cross Emergency Disaster quotas as a gesture toward national recognition for flood sufferers. Duncan called for demonstrating Panhandle hospitality and humanity to counter criticism and to show strength to the world.
Alfred P. Sloan Jr, president of General Motors, refused Secretary Frances Perkins invitation to a Washington conference to settle the strike. He cited union demands, including recognition of the United Automobile Workers as exclusive bargaining agent, as blocking progress and said further talks would be unhelpful. Sloan noted prior failed meetings with Perkins and with John L Lewis of the Committee for Industrial Reorganization.
Blair Cherry announced his resignation as Amarillo Sandies coach to join Texas University as assistant to Dana X. Bible. Governor Allred sent congratulations on Cherry joining the Texas staff, noting seven glorious years of success including three straight state titles and the Sandstorm team’s feared play.

Ed Kenyon a 34 year old Tulia farmer was shot to death in Plainview with Mrs H B Stevens 26 seriously wounded. Stevens a Plainview filling station worker surrendered and was charged with murder. The couple’s two young children witnessed the attack and were splattered with blood as the incident occurred beside a lunch stand. Stevens handed over an automatic pistol to Police Chief Hee Ote Martine and a murder charge was filed in Justice J P Siler's court with a district attorney statement to follow.
Rioting halted a United Automobile Workers meeting in Anderson Indiana with about 1,000 non union men causing eggs to be thrown and fist fights. Police intervened and escorted union members to safety. at least six persons were injured.
John L. Lewis plans to join Secretary Perkins at a automobile peace conference but is reportedly unhappy with the invitation terms. Perkins summoned Lewis along with UAW representatives and General Motors officials to renew negotiations that were set for Michigan last Monday.
Tarrant County officers sought a motive in the slaying of Cecil Odneal 35 whose body was found on a highway north of Fort Worth. Odneal’s cousin John Peter Morrison Jr 28 was charged with murder hours after the death which was from six bullet wounds. Morrison was questioned in a Wichita Falls hospital where he was recovering from a fractured nose and leg suffered when a car struck a railroad crossing guard near Decatur Saturday night.
The House passed and sent to the Senate a bill creating a $50 million seed and crop production loan fund for 1937. Lawmakers said the fund would keep thousands of farm families off relief rolls by supporting seed and crop production.

At Chuquicamata copper mines in Antofagasta Chile an explosion of two carloads of blasting powder killed an estimated 100 workers and foreign engineers R Cowpland of the United States and German F Ruf. Dozens more were injured as offices and housing were damaged. the cause remains undetermined and the mine was heavily disrupted.
Cold front moving toward the frost hit citrus belt as scattered orchard heaters were used again to guard crops. Fire crews and farmers reported limited damage with only brief heating needed, marking the eighteenth warming event since January.

Presidio bid for Highway 3 from Conejo to Marfa was 100 484 01 by L J Miles. Kenedy Highway 96 from Miffin to Sarita bid 34 566 04 by Cage Bros and L A Turner of Bishop.

Florence Italy January 25 Crown Prince Michael, gravely ill after an appendicitis operation, was reported improved today but remains at risk from pulmonary complications.
The House appropriations committee reported a 899.7 million dollar deficiency bill to fund recovery and relief. It includes 790 million for immediate recovery through June 30, with no emergency flood relief added pending unknown needs. Harry Hopkins warned of a 5 million unemployed peak and WPA plans to cut 600 thousand more jobs by June.
In Shreveport Louisiana Bosier Parish Benton court today jurors were chosen for the manslaughter trial of J I Cherry 35 of Logansport indicted for the July 8 killing of Earl Duperter 48 a Beaumont railroad worker. Cherry pleads innocence and defense counsel says he will rely on an unwritten law.
Berlin Jan 25 Reichstag members were summoned to meet in Berlin on Saturday, the fourth anniversary of Hitler rise to power. Reichsfuehrer Hitler will deliver a review of Nazi accomplishments and is expected to pronounce on Nazi foreign policy.
Texarkana Arkansas police report James Kimble Sorsby was found lifeless in a shallow pool near his residence shortly after his mother sent him to a store for groceries. The death occurred on January 25 with no immediate details about the cause released.
W. E. Calvert announces the sale of the Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel to B. G. Byars, a Tyler oil man, with immediate turnover of management.
Three men convicted of using the mails to defraud in a $20,000 swindling operation were sentenced in federal court. Frank Macket Jr a 49 year old Milwaukee lawyer and organizer received seven years and a 2500 dollar fine. William E Haneey a 35 year old Milwaukee lawyer got three years. Samuel Birnstein 45 of New Orleans was sentenced to two years and a 1000 dollar fine. Lewis Levy 40 of Des Moines who pleaded guilty was fined 500 dollars.
In Longview on January 25 officers filed theft over $50 charges in justice court against one of two men held as suspects in a sewing machine salesman fraud. They allegedly posed as secret service agents seeking counterfeit bills and face federal charges for impersonating a federal officer.
Harlingen January 25 District Attorney Joe Hatchitt of Corpus Christi said he was awaiting a Telegram reply from H. H. Carmichael head of the state safety department regarding an order stopping the seizure of slot machines in Brownsville by rangers.
