Reports describe a chaotic Texas House scene over a search bill and Oklahoma lawmakers delaying Mrs Hammond's testimony. UV mercury climbs from 7 to 50 in Chicago with snow flurries and light Panhandle snow, while a blast of cold sweeps the nation and records die.
Weather forecast through 7 PM Saturday for Amarillo and vicinity calls for fair conditions. West Texas generally fair and warmer. New Mexico fair south and unsettled north with rising temperatures. A Lake region low and a western Montana low influence the pattern, while a Montana high brings cold in western Texas. Sunrise 7 50, sunset 6 09.
A. P. Barrett, president of Texas Air Transport Inc, unveils initial routes for a forthcoming passenger air service. The plan includes eight main lines from Dallas Fort Worth to cities such as Amarillo El Paso and San Antonio with future intermediate stops to be announced.
Former German Emperor Wilhelm II, on the eve of his 70th birthday, dictated a foreword to a Doorn interview and spoke via Baron Ulrich Von Sell. He said the November 5 1918 treaty touched reparations, denied German guilt for the war, and urged peace and welfare for the German people.
The Italian steamship Capo Vado sent an SOS via Radio Marine with a position at 31 23 N 48 40 W. The 2713 net ton vessel sails from Catania Sicily toward Baltimore and is owned by Genoese Steamship Navigation Company. The distress position lies about 600 miles southwest of the Azores and 750 miles due east of Bermuda.
In Borger Texas a Prairie Oil and Gas company well burned on the old townsite of Isom a block from Main Street. The fire caused an estimated loss of $10 000 and its cause remains unknown.
Oklahoma's confidential secretary Mrs O O Hammonds testified as the house committee probed the Johnston administration and highway dealings. Witnesses described sales of road machinery to the state highway department linked to Reed Scott and James W Armstrong as bonding counsel. The inquiry also examined Armstrong's role as legal adviser and alleged occultist connections. The Senate investigation into rumored bribes began amid questions about patronage and contracting practices in the highway program.
The $175 million Governor's committee bond plan, approved by Sterling of Houston, supports new construction and reimbursement for counties and districts. Governor Moody released Hobby's telegram stating Sterling will back the committee's recommendations. The proposal allocates 100 million for new construction and 75 million to reimburse preexisting highway expenditures.
Geo Cain and B F Perryman, local farmers, were possibly fatally wounded in a store in Cleburne Texas after a long running feud. Cain had been charged with assault to murder over prior difficulties with Perryman and the situation escalated to gunfire today.
Oscar W. Underwood of Alabama, a noted Democratic leader and former senator, dies at Woollawn in Virginia after a long illness. His passing prompts Senate adjournment in tribute. he had faced paralysis and a stroke after a December hemorrhage and later declined.
Seventy seven airplanes participated in the dedication of San Angelo's municipal airport during the fourth annual West Texas Oil Exposition. Miss Carlene Cromwell christened her father's monoplane as officials observed. About 6,000 spectators watched races and spot landing contests with $1,500 in prizes. prizes were won by Derryberry, Nieninen, and Hraniff in speed events.
Colorado Springs report says Whitey Walker denied involvement in the May 23 1928 First National Bank of Lamar robbery. He had just returned from Buffalo New York while awaiting trial for the Lamar holdup in which four men were killed. He said he knew nothing of the bank robbery and planned to write a book about his experiences.
Jefferson City 26 The Missouri House considers reviving colonial whipping posts to enforce prohibitory laws. A misdemeanor would bring 7 to 20 lashes publicly on the bare back. Cities could establish whipping posts by ordinance. Representative J C Putnam of Howell County argues the whip will deter bootleggers.
William Donovan, chairman, announced there will be no more meetings until Monday. Conferees stay in Santa Fe as commissioners work to draft compact ideas for submission at the next executive session.
In Austin on January 25 the Senate debated prohibition enforcement as Rep Woodall of Marshall saw his search and seizure repeal bill recommitted to criminal jurisprudence. Graves argued the bill was unconstitutional. Forbes of Walker County opposed recommitment and warned of bootleggers invading homes. The house also discussed a constitutional amendment to bar ministers from governorship or legislative office, with Petsch pushing the Fredericksburg land office probe.
R H Pease 44 of San Francisco retired Goodyear president was burned when a sedan caught fire in El Paso. His nurse Van Winkler and driver G A Foy left briefly. Pease dropped blazing matches, blocked, and a passing milkman shattered a window to rescue him. The chow dog in the car perished.
