In Algiers violent clashes between rioters and police left at least 19 dead and 153 wounded amid right wing protests against De Gaulle policy. An army mutiny label accompanied troop reinforcements and censorship on outgoing reports as curfews and barricades persisted.
Harrisburg reports the Democratic State Committee will name 42 delegates at large with half votes and designate Gov. David L. Lawrence as delegation chairman. Lawrence leans toward Senator Stuart Symington or Adlai Stevenson and aims for an uncommitted Pennsylvania delegation of 81 votes at Los Angeles. Lawrence has met backers of Kennedy and Humphrey but did not commit.
Former President Harry S Truman, in an interview with UPI, criticized Paul M. Butler for comments over his chairmanship while noting the firing of Frank McKinney as the best chairman they had. Truman warned that some Democrats are hurting the party by criticizing colleagues and urged a careful choice for the 1960 presidential nominee.

New York January 24 Kennedy tops a confidential Democratic National Committee poll conducted by the New York Herald Tribune. Twenty eight members favored Kennedy as best Nomination chance. Symington received 6½ votes and Johnson 5½. The poll covered six questions with 65 replied, including electability of Adlai Stevenson and Kennedy’s religious affiliation. First Choice tallies put Kennedy at 24, Johnson 11, Humphrey 6, Stevenson and Meyner 3 each.
George Autry an Amarillo resident for 35 years and owner of a local printing business died Sunday at St Anthony's Hospital after returning from a Christmas visit to Harlingen. Services are set for 10 a m Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Autry was a WWI veteran and active in regional horse and historical groups.
He says he has no commitment to any candidate but admits some inclinations toward several contenders. He is widely expected to lean toward Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri.
