Grover M. Yowell, a 63 year old former Paducah Bank vice president, was arrested in Memphis while delivering milk on January 24, ending a seven and a half year search. Indicted in Wichita Falls in 1932 on 12 counts of embezzlement and misapplication, he had reportedly hidden under the name Louis Hodges and worked for a Memphis milk firm since 1932. He waived extradition and would be sent to Wichita Falls. authorities cited a confidential source and FBI bulletin notices in the arrest.
Five state witnesses testified in the district court in the case of Dr. J H Sanford charged with poisoning his wife Hallie Sanford. Neighbors and doctors described July 14 events and the autopsy confirmed poisoning. The defense and additional state witnesses are to follow.
The Panhandle-Plains Historical Society directors in Canyon pass a resolution asking Texas to appropriate 78000 dollars to match federal PWA funds for completing the main unit of the Canyon museum. They list J D Hamlin as president and plan recommendations for a supervisor for the archaeological and paleontological project.
Tom William Word son of J D Word 724 North Johnson Street suffered injuries in a traffic crash while riding a bicycle at the North Second Avenue and Buchanan Street intersection. He was unconscious on arrival at St Anthony's Hospital. driver Jack Bryan 307 South Houston Street said the boy rode into the car as he tried to turn left. The right rear door glass was shattered, suggesting possible head impact. Word is a News Globe carrier and was reported under treatment last night.
In a Texas session report Rep. Galbreath of Wharton blasts the governor's transaction tax plan as the work of thieves and robbers. The house also considers a bill for local option elections to relegalize race track gambling. The senate accepts a resolution to allow introduction of bills for the first 60 days of the general session.
In a tense House debate Galbreath attacks a proposal to seek federal ruling on matching state pension funds if county judges take over governor suggested administration. He derides the measure and calls for penalties for those presenting the insult to Texans as cheers erupt and the session continues.
Army investigators probed a bomber crash that killed veteran Douglas test pilot John Cable after the twin motored craft built for Army use went down at Los Angeles Municipal Airport. Major Kenneth Wolfe led the inquiry into possible sabotage and why a French citizen was aboard.
Four hundred sixty World War veterans from 23 American Legion posts in the Panhandle met in Amarillo to back expanding West Texas State College as a state institution, with plans for a district meeting in Hereford on February 21 and speaker Congressman Martin Dies expected in March. Delegations from many towns attended, and J. T. McEnteggart awarded 20 year service medals while veterans inspected a new hospital under construction.
Senate debate in Austin questioned Elster H. Haile’s Texas residency as state tax commissioner nominee. Haile, a Hereford resident with ties to Deaf Smith County, and Gov. O'Daniel defended his long Texas residence amid reports Haile spent years in Kansas. Senate confirmations pending further review.
