Chicago society buzzed after Harold F. McCormick entertained his ex wife Ganna Walska at a private luncheon in his Rush Street mansion. The two, divorced, met after Mme Walska arrived for a concert engagement and speculation of reconciliation spread.
Administration leaders say the Roosevelt monetary bill will pass in a White House acceptable form. The plan would grant the Treasury title to gold of Federal Reserve banks, revalue the dollar to 50 to 60 percent, and create a 2 billion dollar stabilization fund managed by the Treasury secretary to steady foreign value. Critics led by Senator Glass call the measure dishonest and warn against ceding gold and broad board control, while Robinson and other Democrats defend limiting powers.
New York January 24. Commissioner Austin H. MacCormick conducted an unscheduled inspection at Wel fare Island Penitentiary and found narcotics weapons and contraband. He removed Warden Joseph A. McCann and suspended Deputy Warden Daniel Feehan as he alleged a ganglike domination and unrest within the prison.
Governor Miriam A Ferguson granted a 30 day reprieve to Paul Mitchell the Amarillo mechanic convicted in Lubbock County for robbery with firearms. He was to die Friday after pleading guilty to holding up a Lubbock grocery store during which assistant manager Robert Tharp was killed. Two co defendants await trial. Clyde Shaffer bonds at 5,000 and William E Coupe noted.
A strong north wind cooled the Panhandle. the expected norther did not arrive. Temperatures fell toward freezing with Amarillo dropping to 38 degrees after a high around 71. Dusty winds and a broad cold wave affected Texline and Forgan, with Indian Summer ending in January. Continued on page 9.
Former Gov James E Ferguson said a press briefing indicates serious consideration of a special Texas Legislature session to address emergency relief and a moratorium on mortgage foreclosures. Westbrook report on federal relief plans could decide the timing, with farm foreclosures reported imminent in Grayson County.
The body of Rex Scott, 20, a Black man, was found hanged two miles south of Wicco after a mob of about 300 removed him from Persh County jail. The raid featured cars leaving town and about 100 shots fired in the air as the prisoners were taken away.
Governor Murray launches effort to amend the constitution to abolish the Oklahoma Supreme Court and allow him to appoint a new court after salary cuts sparked a revolt by the current justices and other elected officials. The action comes as he seeks to name a new court pending the election of a chief justice and eight associates.
Partly cloudy and colder Thursday across Amarillo and West Texas with strong northerly winds and livestock warnings in the northern portion. New Mexico sees generally fair but colder conditions north and east. temperatures show highs around 64 to 72 and lows near 48 to 50 degrees.
Louise Buras was acquitted after a half hour jury deliberation in the October slaying of Mrs. H. B. Weaver in Childress. Buras claimed an affair between Weaver and her husband led to letters found in Amarillo. She testified Weaver’s wife collapsed and Homer Weaver lunged at her when she identified herself.
Public Works Administrator Ickes approved an $8,000 loan and grant to Matador for water system improvements. The plan adds a new well and pumping gear, replaces existing equipment, with about $6,000 in labor and materials. 39 percent of the cost is a grant, the rest a loan backed by 4 percent revenue bonds. Work to begin in a month and finish in three months, employing 15 workers.
Paul Sherrod of Lubbock elected president of the Texas Hardware and Implement Association at the Dallas convention. H A Turner of Madisonville named vice president. Directors re-elected include A P Sharp Troup Lee Watson Brownwood Clyde Tomlinson Hillsboro and M S Henry Crowell. New directors named include Tommy Tucker Beeville and Eric Lundblad Georgetown.
Federal investigators exposed a possible mail contact with the Bremer family as they pursue the $200,000 ransom. A Minneapolis post office inspector confirmed letters to the Bremer family may have come through the city. The ransom money was reported still in St Paul, while undercover work and a Minneapolis underworld roundup continue.
In Sciotoville, Ohio, a Pentecostal church floor collapsed 15 feet into a basement trapping about 400 worshipers. Firemen and volunteers pulled injured from the cellar, with at least four in serious condition and danger of fire averted by a drum coal stove falling into the mass.
Chicago January 24 Melvin A Traylor president of the First National Bank remained seriously ill with pneumonia. Doctors said his condition showed a note of cheer as staff and family noted he slept through the morning relapse and a nap in the afternoon left him "very much better" though still critical. He is 55 and has been ill a week.
West Texas Chamber of Commerce launches a membership drive Monday led by J. M. Jim Williams with Amarillo targeting 200 members as part of a Panhandle-wide campaign ending March 15. The organization serves 130 Texas counties and eight in eastern New Mexico, with Amarillo representatives on several committees.
Washington January 24 special correspondent reports formal announcement of Westbrook’s successor as Texas relief director will come within 48 hours. Col Westbrook moves to Washington as Hopkins aide. several Texas names are under consideration though Morrison and Cline reportedly cannot take the post. The appointment is hoped to be nonpolitical and widely acceptable in Texas political circles.
Police broadcasts report a light Ford V-8 passing through McKinney, 30 miles northeast of Dallas, with occupants believed to be Clyde Barrow Bonnie Parker Raymond Hamilton and another man. The sighting prompted officers to be on the lookout tonight.
Fighting erupted inside the Palace of Justice as Royalists demonstrated indoors shouting Down with the Chautemps government. The protest marked a week of demonstrations echoing political tension in Paris.
