Two men aged about 19 to 20 entered during intermission of The Godfather Part II and robbed the theater manager. Patrons reported hearing a bang near the lobby as the suspects, armed with blue steel revolvers, fled after tying the manager and escaping upstairs. Police sought clues as the incident was reported at 11 p.m.
The Council on Wage and Price Stability urged delaying AT&T rate increases set to take effect March 4. It argued AT&T lacks justification for the 7.2 percent rise and cautioned that only limited relief is warranted given the evidence presented.
Detroit based report shows four major automakers posting a strong mid January gain as rebate programs drive a 41 percent rise from early January. Chrysler led with 89 percent gains in the first 10 days, GM up 54 percent, American Motors near 35 percent, and Ford up 12 percent amid efforts to match year ago levels.
President Ford signed a proclamation boosting tariffs on imported oil and said failing to act would signal weakness. Tariffs will raise retail gasoline prices by about three cents a gallon by summer, with Ford calling for a national energy policy. He rejected gas rationing but would consider a comprehensive alternative if Congress proposed one.
The Ford administration asked Congress to raise the federal debt ceiling to 604 billion dollars to fund a projected 1975 and 1976 deficit. Democrats push for a temporary three month extension tied to delaying oil tariffs. Treasury says deficits may reach 35 billion in 1975 and 50 billion in 1976, with current debt cap at 495 billion due to expire March 31.
In Minneapolis three young models paraded in revealing outfits for male residents of Fair Oaks Convalescent and Nursing Home. Joyce Cristen, the social worker, called the event part of total patient care. Residents watched, questioned if models felt cold, and commented on the displays. Frank, 70, said he had seen better in his years.
Partly cloudy through Saturday with a rise in temperatures. High near 60 today and Saturday, low tonight in the upper 20s. Winds will increase from the southwest at 20 to 30 mph.
Mrs. Claudette Landers elected as president of the United Way board, the first woman to hold the post in 51 years. The 27-member board approved new directors, honored retiring president Dr. Winfred Moore and James L. Whyte, and reported a campaign surpassing its goal with new funds and a $10,000 emergency-maintenance fund for agencies.
Oklahoma representative John Jarman, a 24 year veteran, leaves the Democrats for the Republicans in protest of the ouster of three veteran Democratic House committee chairs. He met with President Ford and reports enthusiastic support from the House GOP leadership.
