France Recalls Envoy Over Ben Barka Case

France recalled its ambassador to Morocco after Paris accused Interior Minister Gen. Mohammed Oufkir and aides of involvement in Mehdi Ben Barka’s 1965 kidnapping. A Rabat note said the warrant for Oufkir’s arrest violated the pact for handling cross border prosecutions, and France must request prosecution.

Boy Dies In Sled Accident In Amarillo

A 16 year old Amarillo youth was killed and a friend seriously injured when an improvised sled attached to a pickup crashed beneath a parked truck on Wallace Boulevard near Amarillo Medical Center. Robert Carthel, son of Mr and Mrs John E Carthel, died at Northwest Texas Hospital. Hobby McPherson, 16, suffered a compound fracture of his right leg and survived after late Sunday surgery. The driver, John Alvin McPherson, said the rope broke as the sled veered on a curve, sending the youths under the parked truck of Bud Lane. Stanley Carthel, 17, also rode the sled but escaped injury. Autopsy ordered. cause expected to be head injuries and a broken neck.

Fire Damages Four Downtown Businesses in Amarillo Blaze

A early morning fire heavily damaged a downtown block at 4th and Fillmore, affecting the Yucca Bar and three nearby businesses. Eight fire units battled the blaze as flames surged from the bar, closed prior weeks, with firefighters using snorkel and aerial equipment amid 25 degree weather and a southeast wind.
