In London Britain defends blockade practices amid a growing clash with U S interests. A British spokesman cited four reasons for longer delays of U S ships at contraband stations, including mixed cargoes and failure to provide cargo information. The report notes recent ship losses and the ongoing Allied and neutral vessel casualties as tensions mount.
Texarkana January 23 Henry F Grady assistant secretary of state told the Texarkana Junior Chamber of Commerce that extending reciprocal trade agreements serves national welfare and enduring peace. He argued foreign markets for American products expanded and employment rose with export trade, urging continued a sound policy amid the European war.
Amarillo Jaycees honored G. A. McCullough and Binford Arney with distinguished service awards at a banquet in the Amarillo Hotel. McCullough, head of the Amarillo Crippled Children's Council since 1931, received the senior award. Arney, active in the Santa Fe Railway here, was named the younger honoree. Judge Honts spoke on Americanism and community service. The event highlighted long‑standing civic involvement and Jaycee committee leadership for the coming year.
About 300 Plains Democrats gathered at the Pampa Young Democratic Club rally to back John Garner for the 1948 national convention. E B Germany and Price Daniel led speakers urging precinct and county conventions to build support and nominate Garner.
Capt Byron Brown a retired U S A officer relayed a short-wave SOS to coastguard stating an unnamed vessel with 146 aboard sank between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Coast guards and a U S Navy destroyer searched the area but found no sign of a ship or wreck.
Frank M. Ivey a 55 year old man in Kansas City could not buy a wooden leg. Michael M. Enright a saloon keeper started a street jar with a sign Kick in so that another fellow can kick as well as we do. In three months the jar collected about $30 in pennies nickels and dimes. Last night the jar was stolen.
Partly cloudy and warmer in Amarillo today with increasing cloudiness across West Texas. Rain expected in the southwest portion and snow in the mountains of New Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday. Northeast New Mexico to see rain and snow with warmer conditions in the north portion. Temperature data from Amarillo yesterday shows varied readings with a high around 30 and a low near 12.
Helsinki reports say Soviet planes bombed Nurmes causing many casualties after a direct air raid shelter hit. Other raids hit Hyrysalmi and possibly Hanko Tamisaari as Soviets faced Finnish anti aircraft defenses. Finnish forces claimed heavy Soviet losses and damage to the Red fleet at Kronstadt.

Mrs. Nancy A. Oakes wife of J. M. Oakes clerk of the Seventh Court of Civil Appeals died in a local hospital at 6 45 p m after ill health since July She was 62 and had lived in the area 30 years Survived by husband two sons John E Oakes Roswell NM and James W Oakes Amarillo a daughter Lucille Oakes of Amarillo a brother W J Hancock and a sister Mrs H T Harris Funeral at the First Baptist Church Thursday at 2 pm with Dr J Howard Williams officiating burial Llano Cemetery body at N B Griggs & Sons chapel pending arrival of relatives.
