Rest of the World reports a grim atmosphere at the U S Air Force Academy where 29 cadets have resigned since an investigation began into cheating on classroom examinations. Other items note a Chicago finance firm's defeat in Estes scandal damages case, Lefors rate hike for telephone services, and Churchill's worsening condition.
A Senate hearing on plans to close VA hospitals prompted angry protests as leaders from both parties urged President Johnson to block the move for study. VA Administrator W J Driver defended consolidating to urban centers, saying the plan aims to improve care while minimizing dislocation for veterans and staff.
Washington AP reports the Johnson administration may seek higher highway taxes while proposing cuts to other excise levies to fund the interstate system. A $500 million annual shortfall is noted to complete the 41,000 mile network by 1972. Budget details on excise taxes are not finalized. Post Office shifts postal rate plans with a long study to review structure and classes. The Bureau of Public Roads now estimates the interstate cost at 46.8 billion dollars up from 41 billion.
Southwest Mortuary operator Jim Griggs announced a second ambulance service in Amarillo. The city commission denied his franchise request, saying Amarillo Ambulance Service already provides satisfactory service. Griggs asserts state law allows operation without a city franchise under the 1943 ambulance act.
Patrick Gordon Walker resigned as Britain's foreign secretary after failing to win a parliamentary seat. Michael Stewart, education minister, will replace him. The Leyton loss narrows Wilson's majority to three and sparks talk of possible early elections.
A major winter storm formed over the Texas Panhandle late Friday and was forecast to drop up to three inches of snow on the High Plains, then intensify into a major system across Oklahoma Missouri Iowa and other Midwest states. Amarlrillo recorded .04 inches of moisture by midnight with about half an inch of ice and slush on downtown streets. U S 66 from Amarillo to the New Mexico border remained open but hazardous. snow plows operated on U S 66 and U S 385 north out of Vega. Two flights at Amarillo Air Terminal were grounded though not due to weather. Incoming flights were not expected until Saturday morning.
Houston Astros general manager Pau Richards and coach Clint Courtney travel to Amarillo for a 12 30 p m luncheon in the Vie Mon Room at the Holiday West. Lou Fitzgerald will manage the Amarillo Texas League club and seek a third straight pennant. Admission is 1 50. Richards is known for turning washed up pitchers into stars and is expected to share insights at the event.
Annapolis Governor Millard Tawes unveiled a leather bound volume titled What I Know About Politics. The crowd saw hundreds of blank pages and Tawes quipped there is nothing in it, saying there’s not a damn thing in it.
Fifteen barbers from three Amarillo Air Force Base shops walked out at 3 p.m. Friday protesting pay they say is far below deserved for each haircut. A spokesman said a haircut at 70 cents yields about 42 cents to the barber and they seek a 15-cent raise plus changes to 48-hour weeks with Saturday work after a holiday. Three barbers in officers and NCO clubs were not involved. Lt. Col. Charles Wells said mediation is being sought as officials review the dispute.
Rodeos and barrel racing open the five day Amarillo Stock Show at Tri-State Fairgrounds starting at 10 a.m. with judging for cattle horses hogs sheep and rabbits. Weighing of barrows at 1 p.m. and G S Rodeo performances at 2 and 8 p.m. in the Coliseum highlight a busy opening day as 1500 plus animals enter this year.
A flood of tricks, trailers, and pickups bring animals and people to the event with more than 350 riders signed for seven rodeo events including bronc riding and bull riding. Admission is $2 for boxes and $1 general, stock show free. Judging starts Sunday with 475 hogs expected and several pig breeds vying for premiums.
Tehran AP reports Iran's Prime Minister Mansour was struck by two bullets in an assassination attempt. Doctors said his condition is improving slightly as surgeons treat him. Officials noted he remains conscious and supporters from France Britain and the United States assist in care. Mohammed Bokharaei was arrested at the scene and charged with the shooting.
Las Vegas AP reports singer Connie Francis has won a divorce from Dick Kanellis 34, her public relations man husband whom she wed last August.
