Amarillo and the Panhandle saw light snow as Ochiltree County unveiled four new snow plows. The broader region faced a five day freeze with record cold and snow from the Red River to the Gulf, causing 22 Texas deaths and widespread crop damage.
Secretary Morgenthau said he is coordinating Allied and American air plane buying in the United States at President Roosevelt's request. Washington January 22 Special only three Texans, two from Houston and one from Dallas, appear on Treasury records for 1938 compensation over 75000 dollars. R C Kuldell of Hughes Tool Co. earns 172 849 54 total with 30000 salary and 142 849 54 bonus. S P Brown, also Houston, totals 84 716 15 from 24000 salary and 60716 15 bonus. Leslie L Jacobs of Pollock Paper and Box Co Dallas totals 125 251 71 with 40000 salary and 85251 71 bonus. This year only salaries and bonuses above 75000 were released.
Edwin Carewe, prominent silent era director, died of a heart attack at age 56 in Hollywood. Born in Gainesville Texas he joined Lubin Film Company in 1914 and directed landmark films including Ramona Resurrection and Revenge. He helped launch the careers of Dolores Del Rio Francis X Bushman Gary Cooper and Wallace Beery.

The United States expressed to Great Britain its serious concern over how American ships are treated in the Mediterranean, especially at Gibraltar. An aide memoire shows nine U S ships detained from Nov 15 to Dec 15 for an average of 124 days, versus Italian vessels at about four days, demanding faster examination.

J D Newell the convicted robber who was gravely wounded Sunday morning when attempting to break jail at Canyon was reported holding his own in Neblett Hospital Canyon last night. Passengers aboard the American President liner President Adams tell of a blank warning shot across the bow from a British patrol boat at Gibraltar. Captain Gregory Cullen says the shot was blank and caused by signal confusion after the ship had been stopped several times for allied blockade examinations.
Fort Wayne, Ind. January 22. L. E. Fisher of Edgar Nebraska sent Oscar Braungart a Fort Wayne to Huntington unused ticket and asked for a refund. Braungart replied the ticket dated February 19, 1879, would be redeemed by sending it to St. Louis.
Bucharest reports German forces acting as railway police reached the Romanian border through Russian occupied Poland. Russia agrees to let Germany operate over 2,500 miles of railway linking Romania with Germany and to supervise oil fields near the Romanian frontier. No troop commitment implied, though diplomats warn police presence could pressure Romania.
In Dumas a 55 year old smelter worker John L Messick and his 37 year old wife were found murdered in their two room cabin. Both bodies lay on the bed with a 16 gauge single shot shotgun near the wall. Sheriff Fuqua Younger led the investigation while fingerprint experts from Amarillo arrived. Messick worked at American Zinc Smelting Co and was last seen after leaving work at 8 this morning.
Frank Phillips of Phillips Petroleum states that the board declare a regular 50 cent per share dividend for Q1 1940 payable March 1 to stockholders of record February 2. He notes 1939 earnings around $2.20 per share, up from $2.03, and expects a satisfactory 1940 with no rush to stockpile finished gasoline and crude oil.
Communist Earl Browder, Kansas born American Communist leader, convicted in federal court of passport fraud. He received four years in prison and a $2,000 fine with two consecutive two year counts. Browder had traveled incognito to Soviet conferences and used others’ names on visas. He had previously refused WWI draft and faced ongoing political activity.
The House rules committee approved reestablishment of the Dies un American activities panel and sent it to the full House. Critics charged Dies with associations to a Christian Front collaborator, Merwin Hart, and questioned the inquiry's fairness and impact on minority rights.

O. J. Dutch Brazil age 43 superintendent of Phillips Petroleum Pantex gasoline plant died in Borger General Hospital. He had worked for Phillips 18 years and was well known in Texas Oklahoma and Louisiana oil circles.
