Snow piled up to about 10 inches in Panhandle towns as a severe cold snap hit Friday. Amarillo faced single digits, with temperatures plunging to 8 to 12 degrees below zero and a new seasonal low recorded early Friday morning.
Snowfall Friday pushed depths to about 10 inches in eastern Panhandle areas with little wind drift. Traffic slowed but largely continued in the Tri-State area as large trucks and buses faced delays. a Greyhound bus overturned near Lubbock injuring seven, one in serious condition. Power outages reported in several panhandle locales.
A tall brunet wearing a grey tweed coat robbed the Bank of Dallas on a Friday afternoon, taking about 11 000 to 15 000 before disappearing on foot through heavy snow. The teller did not see a gun, and no arrests were reported.
Newcomb Mott, 27, a Sheffield Mass. resident and salesman, killed himself on a train while being moved to a Soviet labor camp. Soviet officials said he cut his throat in the train toilet. After a seven year wait and a treacherous 100 mile drive through a snowstorm, Hanna Malouf his wife and 12 children were naturalized in Amarillo. The five oldest Maloufs joined 41 others in the ceremony while the rest auto became citizens through parental naturalization. George Malouf 18 Texas Tech student took exams a day early thanks to his father's request.
