John W Weeks is named as defendant in a suit centered on the United States purchase of Austrian ships. The case claims actions by a former U S employee influenced the transaction and resulting obligations.
Washington January 21 The suit filed by Charles Brewer a former Justice Department employee targets John W Weeks former Secretary of War seeking 1 102 000 for claims tied to the 1921 Austrian ship purchases. Brewer says the case seeks double the claimed amount plus 20 000 under the Dent Act. George A Carden and Andersen Herd are named in the claim.
New York reports say promoter Alex Rickard may stage a Dempsey versus Tunney heavyweight title bout at Boyles Thirty Acres in Jersey City next September. Rickard, who has met with Billy Gibson, hints Tunney remains the logical challenger while negotiations near completion.
In Vera Cruz on January 21, Colonel Pascual Cazarin was assassinated on his Papa Joapan river ranch. The killer fled. Cazarin, who took part in the failed de la Huerta revolt in 1923, had since retired from politics.
