Pat Neff, 80, former Baylor University president and Texas governor candidate, died in Waco after a heart attack. Funeral set for First Baptist Church at 3:30 p.m. with Dr. W. R. White officiating. burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Neff, born 1871 near McGregor, rose from farmer’s son to Baylor alumnus, Texas attorney general and speaker of the Texas House, famed for enforcement and prohibition advocacy.

Engine Failure Blamed in Crash at Mather Base
A B-25 bomber crashed into the Mather Air Force Base guard house killing six and wounding sixty one. Pilot Second Lt Peter E Keck of Fair Oaks said an engine failed as he attempted a landing causing the aircraft to pancake into the roof. An Air Force spokesman noted the plane was gliding toward a runway area when it dipped too low.
