Two Littlefield men Wayne Vaughn 21 and Roy Stewart 30 were released on bonds totaling 12000 after theft charges tied to 240000 pounds of grain stolen from the Farmer's Corner Elevator on U S 385 between Hereford and Vega. Authorities link the pair to a regional grain theft ring and say about 1 million dollars in grain has been stolen over eight years.
Two men robbed the First National Bank of Quitaque Monday night taking $1466. They forced Bob Ham into the vault and fled after a passing car interrupted them. Sheriff Vinson Smith said investigators focus on Briscoe County leads as roadblocks remain across the Panhandle.

A 300 pound black bear crawled into a sewer pipe by the San Antonio River to seek warmth as police and two Des Moines men wrestled to remove him. After about 90 minutes they pulled the bear from the pipe and planned to take it to Brownsville for a wrestling match. the bear later escaped from its collar.
President Nixon ordered a halt to further construction of the cross Florida barge canal citing potential environmental damages. He noted the Council on Environmental Quality advised stopping and highlighted risks to the Oklawaha River and regional wildlife. The project would have cost about 180 million dollars with 50 million spent. 26 miles had already been built. The Environmental Defense Fund praised the decision.
