The Chimarra carrying 525 passengers and 87 crew sank within hours after hitting a mine off Kavaliani near Chalkis. About 200 were rescued, five ships and planes aided the effort, and survivors recounted panic, freezing water, and a deck crowded with people as lifeboats failed to launch fully.
Freris recalls passengers scrambling for a lifeboat that capsized with about 30 survivors from a crowd of roughly 200 women and children on Chimarra. Some 50 political deportees and gendarmes also aboard. Prince Paul possibly aboard Themistocles. Survivors swam to barrels and were rescued by a caique. Night sailing in mine-dangerous waters, ministry ignored protests to suspend operations.
Seven of the initial 38 survivors arriving in Athens were severely injured while the others received treatment for burns and minor wounds. First aid was provided at Rafina, near the Marathon plain known for ancient Greek battles against Persia 2,300 years ago.

A fatal two car crash near Tulsa left Mrs. Walter T. Rogers of Lubbock dead and Harold Long of Lubbock in custody after hospital treatment. Dorothy Harris of Lubbock, injured, reportedly in good condition at Swisher County Hospital, with Rogers’ body taken to Plainview Sanitarium. Funeral services for Mrs. Rogers pending.

In Pleasantville Pennsylvania a four room farmhouse burned after a gasoline accident. Father James L Emerson 33 died entering the doorway to rescue his five children Marceline 11 James 9 Joy 7 Hazel Ruth 5 Billy 3 who perished inside. The mother Annette Emerson 34 survived with second degree burns. Kenneth Robinson who brought Emerson home saw the blast and the mother surrounded by flames.
A 60-year-old man, Andrew Kalozney, was found unconscious in his lower East Side room after a beating described by police as terrific. A Bellevue hospital surgeon removed an inch-long wood splinter from brain tissue and repaired the skull, with the patient alive but in serious condition 12 hours post operation.
Robert J. Riley, 23, and Kath leen E. Margetta, 32, both blind, wed today in a north side Catholic church with seven blind friends as attendants. The pair met four months ago on an assembling line at an adding machine company. The article notes they work for Piains Chevrolet Co and include local business ties.

Eddie Mose Taylor, 31, of Amarillo, a rodeo performer famed for a five second bulldogging run at the National Western show, was arrested on charges of deserting from the Army. FBI agent R P Kramer said Taylor admitted AWOL from Camp Granite, California since August 10, 1943. Local officials could not be reached for comment.
The board of directors of the United Synagogue of America representing 400 congregations of the Conservative Jewish movement decided today to adopt the old American method of circuit riders to minister to members at a distance from meeting places.
Poles chose their first postwar parliament in a vote marked by intimidation of opposition blocs and a lack of secrecy. At least eight people were killed as bloc organizers pressed turnout, with reports of coercion, threatened jobs and homes. Counting began as PSL leader Mikolajczyk debated resignation if bloc wins. Official results due January 31.
Admiral Cruzen announced the submarine Sennet will abandon its attempt to break through the ice pack guarding Little America and depart for the United States around February 1. The effort failed after five days amid dangerous conditions, while unloading of 4224 tons of cargo from the Yancey proceeded and the harbor gradually became more tenable despite bad weather hindering reconnaissance flights.
Amarillo's Will Rogers Range Riders, the largest group at Beauford Jester's inauguration, left on a 14 car special train for Austin with 154 passengers. They will present a Range Riders costume to the governor and provide a horse for the opening parade, with horses stabled at Camp Mabry.
