The United States announces a new austere naval communications facility at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Construction will begin in March with a 256 American staff plus some British help to support reconnaissance planes and U S and British ships in a key oil route.
The Texas College Coordinating Board approved aid to private schools via tuition supplements and suggested covering the total cost of academic and vocational programs in junior colleges while local groups handle building needs. Also, shipyard workers in Poland walked out six hours demanding political and economic changes from the new leadership and called for the removal of officials linked to the riots.
The U S Postal Service announced an immediate embargo on all mail to England Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland in response to a warning from the British Postal Administration of an airstrike by British postal workers expected Wednesday The ban excludes mail to American military personnel in the United Kingdom and mail bound for Ireland.
Federal hearing before Judge Sut tle probes the legality of abortions at Wilford Hall Lackland Air Force Base after a restraining order halted operations last Saturday. Houston attorney Paul B. Haring filed the suit as a taxpayer representing unborn children.
Two men robbed the First National bank in Quitaque late Monday evening. They forced vice president Bob Ham back inside the bank and locked him in the vault, making off with what Ham described as loose change and after-hours cash. The suspects arrived in a late model Chevrolet and fled after the robbery.

The U S imposes a 12 month ban on aircraft sales and ship repair credits to Ecuador in response to seizures of American fishing vessels on what Washington calls the high seas. Secretary Rogers summoned Ecuador’s ambassador and warned of possible further measures including $25 5 million in economic aid review. Officials note Ecuador seeks A 36 aircraft and helicopters and a 165 000 credit for ship overhaul.
Texas Democratic Victory Dinner in Austin featured Wayne Newton and Cactus Pryor as entertainment and master of ceremonies Dr Elmer C Baum. Speakers included Lt Gov Ben Barnes and Gov Preston Smith who teased the legislative session and future plans. Inaugural events proceed with a 7 am prayer breakfast and a noon oath ceremony on the capitol steps with Amarillo officials in attendance. The Will Rogers Range Riders drill team will join the 3 pm inaugural parade.
Amarillo school trustees agreed Monday night to extend to September 1973 the target date for opening the new Amarillo High School. They authorized Cantrell & Co. to proceed with working drawings on Puckett Place high school and asked for a written soundness report on AHS. The board also revisited the fire insurance settlement and potential civil action, amid NAACP concerns over the project location and funding.

Mrs. Fly, widow of Dr. Claude Fly, said a ransom note to free him, tied to Tupamaro kidnaping in Uruguay, is probably not authentic. She noted the State Department had not proven authenticity and questioned U S policy on paying any ransom. Dr. Fly, once with the Soil Conservation Service in Amarillo, is described as an innocent pawn between governments.
