Three trainmen were believed killed in a fiery Grand Trunk wreck west of Battle Creek as two freight trains collided near a viaduct. Boy Strangled in Prison Cell at Missouri Training School

Rolland Barton a 15 year old inmate of the Missouri Training School for Boys was strangled in a segregation cell after an escape attempt. Two companions were being questioned as authorities investigated the Sunday night incident marking a second recent strangulation at the troubled facility.

Spinster Miss Amanda Pilgert Found Amid Treasures

In Phillipsburg New Jersey an 85 year old spinster Miss Amanda Pilgert was found dead at her home after a three day period. Police reported cash totaling over four thousand dollars plus two bank books showing fourteen thousand in all. Coroner ruled natural causes and police posted a 24 hour guard over the packed house. Evidence included bedsheets silk stockings and envelopes from a silk mill payroll.

Four Uninjured In Cessna Landing Accident

Pilot Stanley Blackburn and three passengers escaped injury when his twin engine Cessna sportplane nosed over during landing at Tradewind Airport. Returning from New Orleans with Mrs. Blackburn and Mr. and Mrs. Percy Blackburn, they reported tire failure in mid air and a ground loop before the craft toppled. Observers noted damage to the air frame propellers and tail assembly.

Amarillo Cowman Bids High for Steer at Auction

Denver January 18 A champion shorthorn steer auctioned at the National Western Stock Show by comedian Jack Benny raised 2500 for the March of Dimes. The lightweight class winner was donated by Miss Frances Winkler of Castle Rock Colorado. The high bidder was W S Cline Amarillo cattleman.

Atlantic Now Five Hour Hop

In Shannon Ireland on January 18 the Pan American Clipper Challenge carrying 80 dozen eggs and freight for Britain set a new Atlantic crossing record. Pilot Capt Russell Tegturan of Amityville NY clocked five hours three minutes aided by a 95 mph tailwind and speeds around 395 to 400 mph with three passengers aboard who were unaware of the record during the flight.
