A Blue RibbonAir Force investigation team scoured three acres of rubble and ashes in Wichita Kansas on Sunday seeking the cause of a KC-135 jet tanker crash that struck a residential area and claimed many lives amid heavy snowbound conditions on the plains.
Seven airmen died when a fuel laden jet tanker crashed on Pratt Street in Wichita. The blast shattered windows and engulfed 11 homes and a small clearing near a residential area. Red Cross aid offered but no lodging requests, leaving about 200 homeless in freeze conditions.

Neal, 20, was killed by a shotgun at Marlin’s cottage where he and his roommate were snowbound after a double date. District attorney's investigator George Currey said Neal and Carolyn were in bed, both clothed, with no misconduct involved. He plans to seek an indictment in about two weeks.
A Swiss rescue task force scoured Lake Maggiore for two men aboard the Tiger Shark midget submarine after it vanished while filming for Swiss television. Franco Vigano, 34, and Eduard de Paull were aboard when the craft failed to surface, with officials suggesting a cable entanglement and oxygen limits of about six hours. Despite 30 divers, boats, spotter planes, and underwater television, no trace was found as authorities investigated the disappearance near Locarno. The rescue effort followed the Sunday search of the northern tip of the alpine lake, where the sub disappeared Saturday afternoon during an underwater shoot.

Seven persons died in two separate crashes eight hours apart on U S 70 80 east of Lordsburg New Mexico. An Amarillo truck driver Dalton Mitchell 79 escaped injury when his tractor trailer was struck after he pulled off the highway. A Volkswagen bus clipped a truck and then hit Mitchells rig, crushing occupants of the bus. Victims identified on page two.
