Potter County unveils a $420000 courthouse with an 8 am public viewing and a simple opening. Khiva Shrine members greet visitors on upper floors with a bridge party and fez wearers. Amarillo College of Music Junior Band performs on the second floor while tours proceed from top to bottom without guides.
In Glendora Mississippi on January 17 reports say about 2000 residents in the Tippo Basin remain marooned as five widening fissures appear in levees. Boats have brought a few refugees to Charleston while the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad remains cut off. Red Cross warns only motor boat fleets can reach the area, but survivors may hold out as waters rise until help arrives.

W H Scrivenor faces murder charges in the August reprisal killing of Mrs Jane Jones 26 wife of gang chief Chester A Keggy Jones. Indicted with Del McCabe the pair were linked to a bank robbery gang. McCabe died resisting arrest at Des Moines.
Earth shocks woke residents of Friuli near Venice at dawn. No damage or casualties were reported. A tremor had been felt the day before, but authorities indicated they found no injuries or property losses.
Six Army planes from March Field California began a mercy mission to snowbound Navajo Indians in Winslow Arizona delivering 10 800 pounds of rations by noon after survey flights designated distress points over the reservation. Drops continued with each plane carrying 900 pounds in ten bundles of beans flour sugar salt pork and dried fruit.
Mrs. M. E. Blair of Lamesa celebrated her 101st birthday with a simple life and daily coffee. She has lived through the Mexican, Civil, Spanish American and World Wars, never left Texas, and cites not much traveling as a factor in her longevity. She eats four meals daily and has given up tobacco, recounting stories to visitors at her daughter’s home.
Senator Arthur Robinson and Representative C E Moore warned the Anti-Saloon League that government control of liquor would make the United States a bartender for 120 million people. A league convention tribute to Bishop James Cannon Jr praised his stand for conscience and independence, noting his refusal to reveal campaign associates to protect them.

Seven people were killed when a local train derailed slowly between Paris and Abbeville. The accident occurred near Saint Just en Chaussée on January 17.
A border patrol and civil posse at Paso El Diablo, 20 miles south of McAllen, chased a band of armed Mexican horse thieves who crossed the Rio Grande after a gun fight in which Toribio Gonzales, 25, was killed and two companions wounded. Authorities, including Chief Inspector D P Gay, reinforced by Mission and Mercedes officers, combed the river area as the band fled toward the brush and riverbank.

James H Rutherford 67 a Clarendon pioneer and former Donley County sheriff died after a car left the highway six miles west of Claude and plunged into a ditch. Oscar Hill found him unconscious and he died later at Hillhom hospital. Authorities noted possible head injury with no broken bones. Rutherford was father to Jack Rutherford of Amarillo and Mrs Howard Van Trease of Amarillo.
In Lamesa on January 17 a head on collision near the city limits on State Highway 83 left Cynthia Ann Reed five years old dead. Roy Shipp twenty two was in critical condition with a crushed skull and broken jaw. R Cyrel Kirk the county attorney suffered broken ribs and Mrs Kirk was shocked. Reed and his wife in the Kirk car had minor bruises. The Don M Burkett car carried six others from Higginbotham area. The children of the Kirk couple were uninjured.
