Twenty four fire alarms blasted Washington between midnight and noon drawing aid from Baltimore and scaring the city. The outbreaks stretched the fire department across multiple sections with more than thirty firefighters reported slightly injured as piroman threats overwhelmed the capital.
John J. Fisher confessed to police that he started two fires in Washington today, at the McDowell grain warehouse and the Lank Woodward company. He was arrested after suspicious citizens reported the grain warehouse blaze.
Property losses run to several thousand dollars as fires across Northwest Washington and nearby areas are ruled incendiary. A Walter Reed patient is held for questioning while Baltimore firefighters assist. witnesses say John Jacob Fisher, 29, was present at several blazes but claims he only watched.
The Texas highway commission announced that all bids for the Brazos River bridge at Chappell Hill were too high and the contract will not be awarded until later. The bridge would connect Washington and Waller counties and had been awaiting bids for months. New bids will be called soon.

Special to The News from Farwell Texas reports jurors in the Friona State Bank robbery case against Jim Bryant appeared hung after a trial that saw the defense argue the state failed to prove guilt. Defense witness was Bryant’s wife while the state presented three witnesses including the bank cashier Jeff Osborne and Sheriff Jim Martin. Bryant’s attorney was Clark Wills. Bryant had been named an accomplice by co-defendant Red Cummings who received 15 years. another man, R L Hicks, was acquitted.
Ivemere Ladard owned by Kansas State Agricultural College Manhattan Kansas was named grand champion fat steer at the National Western Stock Show in Denver Colorado today January 17 United Press report indicates the top prize went to the Kansas college entry.

Police and relatives of J. R. Blanton of 402 North Polk Claude, say finding a hit and run driver seems unlikely after Blanton died from injuries suffered December 30 near the Rock Island station. No witnesses or clues emerged as he never regained consciousness. He was moved to Claude on the Monday after the accident.

The fog and mist hindered visibility yet helped wheat crops, and Slaton reported six tenths of an inch of rain Monday night, the first of 1928.
