The Trainmen group endorses Lawrence Hagy as a progressive public official. Signed by three members of the committee late yesterday, the statement claims he would be accessible to all citizens and represent the whole city, not just a part, amid the mayoral campaign.
Endorsement from Frosty Hamrick Lodge No 608 Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen urges Lawrence Hagy to accept the mayoral candidacy. Friends report petitions gaining traction and expect Hagy to run. Other races see S F Pelton H S Stephenson and Al Reville filing for commissioner posts.
A plan to create a separate air force under a Secretary of National Defense would keep each service as a department with its own chief and access to the President. The Navy would retain Marine Corps and land-based aviation, and four secretaries could carry cabinet status. Congressional reactions ranged from praise to skepticism as details remain to be seen.
Vincent Auriol, a 62 year old socialist peacemaker, elected first president of France’s fourth republic at Versailles by 452 votes. He will be escorted to Paris amid prewar style fanfare as Communist and Socialist delegates provide the deciding margin. He plans early cabinet talks with Jacques Duclos and Maurice Thorez.
Mrs Roosevelt notes in My Day column that she is sad to lose her driving license after an Yonkers accident last August. The New York State Motor Vehicle Department revoked it but said reinstatement could be sought after 30 days. She says she will not seek special treatment and is grateful no one was seriously injured.
Senator Theo G Bilbo of Mississippi will undergo an operation to remove decayed bone from his mouth as announced by his surgeon. In other news Chevrolet remains the lowest priced car in the small car field with Plains Chevrolet Co. advertising price checks.
Herman Talmadge took control of Georgia's gubernatorial office and executive mansion with state troopers backing him. Ellis Arnall called the move a perfect panzer movement as guards patrolled the capitol. Arnall said the legislature lacks authority to name a successor and would resign only if lieutenant governor designate M. E. Thompson assumes power.
Marie Didion, a 51 year old mother of twelve in Edinboro Pennsylvania, says she would sell one of her eyes to secure food and a home for her children. She would also give her other eye after death for future security. Her husband William is ill and she relies on a Navy allotment. she dreams of a small farm with cows and machinery to support her family.
The Senate Rules Committee sent proposals to a subcommittee led by Senator Wherry to study breaking filibusters by a simple majority vote. The action was announced in Washington on January 16.
Amarillo police report a sequel to The Egg and I titled The Egg and Eye. An irate citizen called after eggs were thrown in a snowball attack and yolk spilled into his eye. Police found no suspects on arrival.
Willie Francis refused a substitute for his second electric chair execution. The 18 year old prisoner, who escaped death last May due to chair failure, said If anybodys gonna sit Ill sit. His attorney called the substitute offer illegal and noted a telegram claiming ex Army Capt John F Kenny would take Willies place. The telegram cited Kenny being disabled and unable to obtain VA support. The Supreme Court ruled another execution attempt could proceed.
Washington Jan 16 AP an industry spokesman told a Senate Judiciary subcommittee that pending portal pay suits could wipe out U S aircraft firms. E E Wilson chairman of the Aircraft Industries Association warned Congress must act to relieve the disaster threat from back pay claims totaling over four billion dollars.
Quay County youths aged 13 to 21 from New Mexico form a square dance team for Gov Beauford Jesup’s inaugural ball in Austin. The 12 members, ranch-raised and horse trained, perform on foot and on horseback in 20 to 30 minute routines, wearing range attire rather than western regalia.
In Austin the 50th Legislature completed passage of two bills and sent them to Governor Stevenson for signature before adjourning. Bills One and Two provide for a $350000 salary and expense appropriation and authorize appellate judges to administer oaths, enabling the chief justice to swear in the governor-elect at the inaugural. The session also prepared for emergency measures on redistricting, teacher pay, university degrees, and aeronautics law, with canvassing of election results planned for Monday.
