After a year of the Dalhart soil conservation project 96 percent of the 26 000 acre demonstration is under control. By January 1 1935 only 800 acres remain unreclaimed with 19 100 acres treated during a year of low moisture.
J Lindsay Nunn of Amarillo led the buyers at the Hereford stock sale drawing bidders from California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Colorado. Seventeen bulls averaged 354 dollars while eighteen cows averaged 278 dollars. Nunn paid 750 dollars for Super Superior 50th and 475 dollars for Donna Anna 6th plus 475 for Bell Blanchard. Malcolm Shelton bought Super Superior 64th for 650 dollars for Robert T. Wilson of Flagstaff.
Forecasts show Friday partly cloudy and colder across Amarillo and West Texas with unsettled northern areas. New Mexico expects generally fair weather with little change in temperature. Yesterday's temperatures show highs near 60s and lows in the 40s, with some inconsistent OCR data.
Washington sources report Senate leaders moved to pass the coalition Baby Bond bonus bill by tomorrow night. Treasury Secretary Morgenthau testified before the Senate Finance Committee but did not oppose the bill. he warned new financing could total about 5.5 billion dollars over 17 months unless the administration enacts further legislation. British author Rudyard Kipling remains in very critical condition after an emergency operation for a perforated stomach. Dr A E Webb Johnson announced the update as Kipling’s wife and daughter were summoned to his bedside following an earlier bulletin that called his status extremely grave.
Augustus Dwight Beard a 25 year old escaped convict and former North Carolina University star athlete confessed to six recent holdups in Fort Worth. After identification he was returned to Dallas for further handling and custody.

George Kennedy 45 was arrested 12 miles south of Hugo in Grant County by Sheriff Duncan for questioning in the hatchet slaying of his 50 year old wife Pearl. Neighbors alerted authorities when the wife disappeared from the Kennedy home and her body was found buried in a shallow grave.
Plainview authorities set a deadline of midnight tonight for beer sales after the attorney general's ruling that beer cannot be legalized in a political subdivision of a dry county. The move makes beer selling illegal in Plainview starting now.
At Sing Sing prison Albert H. Fisch 66, slayer of Grace Budd, and John Smith 41, a one legged Black man and former Harlem restaurant operator, were executed. Smith went to the chair at 11 PM and died at 11.04. Fisch followed at 11.06 and died at 11.09. The killings occurred eight years ago in a Westchester cottage.
Governor Allred issued a full pardon to Thurman Thompson in a Harris County robbery by assault case ruled a mistaken identity. Thompson served 3 months 20 days before a prior conditional pardon and restoration of full citizenship rights followed after prosecutors and officials confirmed innocence.
Dewey Goode of Dallas and Lawrence Chanter of Los Angeles were freed after police determined they knew nothing about the seven month old disappearances of two couples in the New Mexico desert. Chanter's brother Clarence was being detained in Los Angeles on alleged parole violation.
A court rejected the defendant's plea, setting the stage for continued proceedings. Prosecutors indicate the decision will allow further action toward resolution of the case and potential subsequent motions.
Bruno Richard Hauptmann, convicted Lindbergh baby killer, is granted a 30 day reprieve by Governor Harold G. Hoffman of New Jersey. The stay comes 29 hours before the scheduled execution, with the governor citing diverse reasons for the delay and ensuring several more weeks of life for Hauptmann.
In Trenton New Jersey on January 16 officials said Bruno Richard Hauptmann faces a new death sentence between March 16 and April 11 after his current 30 day reprieve expires February 15. Attorney General Wilentz said he will seek a new death warrant from Justice Trenchard and the law requires a date four to eight weeks after signing.
Governor Hoffman announced a 20 day reprieve for Bruno Hauptmann after consulting with the attorney general. The decision follows a Supreme Court denial of habeas corpus and a stay of execution. Further clemency requires new evidence for a possible retrial or additional pleas.
