A Panhandle area tragedy leaves Mrs. West critically wounded after Sam West, 45, shot her four times then killed himself in a camp kitchen. Daughters recount that the couple, separated months ago, argued in a Panhandle grocery store area before the deadly morning incident. Mrs. West was rushed to Northwest Texas hospital in Amarillo and remained conscious, while West’s body was taken to Panhandle for funeral arrangements. five children survive.
In Wilburton Oklahoma on January 16 the town had buried most victims of a Degnan McConnell mine disaster that killed at least 91. Relatives stood by the graves as undertakers rushed to complete burial after two days of recovery work. More than forty men were laid to rest locally, with others sent to nearby cities.
The Sunday News and Globe reports insufficient colored comic sections. A peach colored four page comic is distributed to those missing the colored portion, but the "Mr. and Mrs." strip is deemed poor and printed in the second section. It will take about three weeks to boost the colored comic order.
In Amarillo, American State bank announced major leadership changes with James L. Smith resigning as chairman and Ben C. D. Bynum stepping down as president. Judge J. C. Paul named chairman, Dc. M. McCullough elected president, J. H. Paul reelected vice-president, C. H. Keeney cashier, and C. P. Longan with Rial C. Long named assistant cashiers. Smith leaves to manage private business but keeps bank stock. Bynum had led since organization but has been inactive for years. Directors named include J. C. Paul, P. H. Lander gin, B. C. D. Bynum, W. B. Allen, G. D. Bowie, Charles Dammeler, J. H. Paul, C. H. Keeney and C. M. McCullough.
In Estelline Texas January 16 gunmen rifled the ticket cash drawer and blew two safes at the Fort Worth Denver passenger station. They escaped with 55 dollars in currency as explosions wrecked the station interior causing about 900 dollars in damage. No arrests yet but authorities chase a reputed crew.
Senator Moses attacked the world court proposal while agriculture legislation moved in both chambers. Governor Pinchot debated prohibition questions with Secretary Mellon and Senator Copeland pushed a seizure resolution for anthracite mines. Shreveport reports four counted indictments against Hugh Fisher local attorney and J D Wiley J J Collins Maggie Wiley and Willie Collins all charged on eighty two counts under federal land and mail fraud statutes in a Caddo Parish land fraud probe. The grand jury’s report was filed in district court with all defendants pleading not guilty and Willie Collins waiving arraignment.
Premier Mussolini challenged opponents to debate their accusations of his complicity in the Matteotti murder tomorrow in the chamber. Matteotti was killed in June 1924, a major blot on fascism and a rallying point for opponents.
Sunday partly cloudy and colder in the southeast portion. Eastern New Mexico sees fair skies and cooler temps. Pressure is high over the Plateau and east, low over western Texas. Snow has fallen in parts of the northern Rocky Mountains and eastern Texas. Warmer conditions prevail across the Plains and lower Mississippi Valley with slight temperature changes. Tonight expected partly cloudy to largely clear with colder readings. Maximums and minimums reported yesterday show varied temperatures.

Mrs. Luther Casey of Lockney area suffered deep burns to hands and face while saving her 4 year old son from a blaze that destroyed a home eight miles northeast of Lockney. The child wandered back inside as flames blocked exits. mother crawled through fire to reach him. Both doorway and house were consumed, but the boy escaped uninjured.
Texas geologists from consulting firms and major oil companies organized the West Texas Geological Society at a San Angelo dinner on January 16. Dr J W Beede of Dixie Oil was elected president with W E Cottingham of Roxana Petroleum as vice president and Miss H T Kinker of Ricker and Dodson as secretary treasurer.
Former Kentucky congressman John W. Langley began a two year term for conspiracy to violate the national prohibition law. He arrived with Roy B. Williams and checked in as Prisoner No. 21516, becoming one of about 3,000 inmates at the Atlanta facility.
Perry Wilson, from a Randall county family, says two unidentified white men attacked him on the highway between Southland and Post. He is held for investigation in the Pred Conner automobile dealer murder case in Tulsa last July. J F Frye identified Wilson as the man seen with Connor en route to Tul ia from Abilena. Fingerprint efforts continue as investigators press for results.
Tara Augerot, sent to state penitentiary for four years for burglary and transporting liquor, was pardoned by Gov. Miriam Ferguson. Augerot and R. D. Webb broke into the Oliver drug store, Webb retrieving liquor. The pardon followed pleas from Sheriff Pollard and District Attorney Idoyd Fletcher. Augerot, then at Liberal Kansas, surrendered after selling his overcoat to fund return fare.
Congress debates farm relief bills to curb price swings. Sen Frazier proposes 200 million dollars for a federal agriculture marketing board to bind corn wheat and cotton. Rep Little seeks 100.9 million for a revolving fund to create bonded elevators and store wheat for sale at fair returns.
Chicago January 16 The federal drive to regulate radio broadcasting reached a new stage as Attorney General Sargent ordered Zenith Radio to be prosecuted for using a wave length assigned to a Canadian station. Zenith's WIAZ began broadcasting at 829.5 meters, past its 822.4 meter allocation to ease air congestion, provoking government action.
Mrs. Essie Moore, described as apparently crazed, used a razor on her children resulting in one girl slain and another in critical condition. Law enforcement investigated the brutal incident in Lockney, with authorities seeking to stabilize the surviving child and determine motive.
Ed Pratt, a farmer near Floyd County's Lockney area, discovers his sister in law Mrs Es sie Moore and her two young daughters dead from slash wounds after a suspected psychotic episode. The mother attacked the children then killed herself, in a case described as a sudden delusion about kidnapping. The Moore family had lived in Lockney and the father is in California.
Nell Carter, 38, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. M. Carter of 2095 North Buchanan street, was run down by a passing automobile while on an errand for his mother. The driver did not stop and fled the scene. Carter was carried into his home and treated for a bruised hand and other painful injuries though none are believed to be life threatening.
Washington Jan 16 The House approved war debt agreements with Belgium Romanian Latvia Estonia and Czechoslovakia Slovakia totaling about 600 million dollars. The resolutions authorize acceptance of terms from the American debt commission, completing settlements negotiated in the summer, Italy’s was approved yesterday.
Amarillo delivered 5 100 copies of The Sunday News and The Sunday Globe with less duplication than expected. Circulation managers projected around 4 000 city copies, while the total press run reached 14 000, the largest regular edition to date, indicating Amarillo’s population near 27 000 to 90 000.
