The Air Force said radar on Shemya Island Alaska detected a Soviet object with missile characteristics moving southeast toward the Pacific. It may be a missile or a space vehicle and identification was not yet possible at midnight. Three Soviet instrument ships had been sighted en route to a claimed impact area southwest of Hawaii, with no warning issued this time.
A reader proposes sending food to China while adding tranquilizers to the aid, arguing Reds face hardship and suggesting the plan could weaken their resolve. The letter blames the year’s misfortune on Chinese Reds and reflects wartime sentiment.

Dallas Rierson, director of the State Department of Agriculture in Las Cruces, says consumers in New Mexico lose about $3 million yearly as meat markets and grocers across the state underweight pre packaged meats.
Rierson says weights and measures in the state operate at top efficiency after a new pre packaging program. He notes cases where a one pound label may hide an ounce or two short due to packaging materials. No charges filed yet as the program is new.
New York on January 13 1961 saw a record 1292 stocks traded with 646 advancers 414 decliners and the rest unchanged. IBM surged 14.75 to 622.25 on strong earnings while the Dow rose 5.15 to 633.65 and volume reached 4.52 million shares. Major gainers included General Electric Du Pont Proctor & Gamble Westinghouse and Republic Aviation. Dome Mines fell 1.12 to 26.75 and Jones & Laughlin Steel dropped 1.12 to 63.00.

President Eisenhower to send Congress a peacetime defense budget of 42.9 billion dollars for the new fiscal year starting July 1, with 45 percent of funds to the Air Force. Navy and Army receive 11.9 and 10.4 billion dollars respectively, while manpower totals 2,492,900 across services, and several missile and space projects face cutbacks.
Marvin Leroy White, 28, ended a 13 hour chase after abducting a officer and a civilian and eluding more than 100 officers in Potter and Randall counties. Detec tive Darrel Lowrance spotted White downtown Amarillo and arrested him at Levinge's Department Store after recognizing him at Hageman's Cafeteria. White said he expected a life sentence and did not intend to harm officer Ray Collins.
Brazil and the United States signed an extradition treaty to close Brazil as a refuge for U S fugitives. Three Americans may be immediately affected: BenJack Cage of Texas, Lowell M Birrell of New York, and others. The pact now awaits approval by both nations’ legislatures.
A United States B58 Hustler jet bomber flew a 621 mile closed course between Edwards AFB California and a point near Yuma Phoenix Arizona averaging 1200.194 mph establishing six new world speed records. Pilot Maj Henry J Deutschendorf Jr Tulsa Oklahoma described the flight as routine despite intense g forces and paint peeling.
A cab driver reports a well dressed man at Tradewind Airport Friday afternoon. The passenger asked for time and cigarettes then stole the driver’s watch lighter and money before slipping away saying he was a magician. The driver was left with only fare and a one dollar tip.
