Polar Plane Rescue Brings Six Survivors Home
A Navy PBM Mariner crash in Ellsworth Land left six survivors after an eight mile overland trek to open water. They were saved by seaplane Pine Island crew in a relief mission that faced fog and ice delays before landing. The group included Captain Henry Caldwell and Lt. (JG) William Kearns Jr. with several others listed as survivors. two crew members were killed in the Dec. 3 crash.
