Amelia Earhart Putnam lands in Oakland completing the first solo flight from Hawaii to California. She describes fatigue after the milestone journey across fog and clouds, then responds to cheering crowds and combs her hair before brief remarks.
Reports from Vega describe a massive rabbit drive where 12,500 jackrabbits were killed by 500 hunters firing about 30,000 rounds. General Loyd led the operation near Vega, with 12 miles of farmland cleared and dust obscuring visibility as rabbits fled and died in large numbers.
George S. Hamlin, charged with killing his wife, hired Amarillo attorney E. T. Miller after three days in solitary confinement. Miller plans a prepared defense with possible multiple angles and said Hamlin will speak through counsel. trial could occur during the eight weeks starting January 28 in 47th District Court. Hamlin provided no comment beyond noting Miller will handle statements.
Partly cloudy and colder Sunday with a cold wave by Sunday night. West Texas shows colder conditions and a north cold wave with single digits to near below ten by night. New Mexico expects generally fair but colder conditions east portion. Temperature readings for Amarillo yesterday ranged from 28 to 64 with highs and lows noted. Weather outlook projects fair and cold start to the week with occasional rains and a warm trend toward midweek near seasonal averages.
Texas lawmakers adjourned as they await Governor elect James V Allred's views on the upcoming inauguration. About 125 bills were filed in the first week including repeal of prohibition, public utilities regulation, sales tax ideas, and chain store tax.
Saarbrucken Jan 12 Nazis confiscating plebiscite voting cards of Jews in the Saar leaders of the anti Nazi united front complained to the League of Nations governing commission today. Members of the Nazi German front are going among Jews and asking how they will vote in tomorrow's plebiscite. The Jews reportedly said they would vote for the future of the Saar.
In Saarbrucken on January 12 the tallying of votes for the historic plebiscite will be completed by Tuesday. Strict precautions include no telephone lines in the Wartburg auditorium and a ban on reporters using phones until A Brodhe, head of the plebiscite commission, broadcasts the results in French and German.
In Austin on January 12 James V Allred of Wichita Falls will be sworn in as Texas governor at noon with thousands present. At 36 he becomes the second youngest chief executive in state history as weather worries loom over outdoor ceremonies at the old capitol. Walter F Woodul of Houston will become lieutenant governor before the oath.
The Washington Post reports James A. Farley postmaster general as a likely successor to Will Hays as czar of the movies. A movement to replace Hays gains headway with Roosevelt allies Nicholas Schenck and Harry M. Warner and has gained a key board position. Hays’ displacement is seen as only a matter of time.
Washington scene today centers on potential swift congressional action if the Supreme Court overturns the Roosevelt monetary program in the gold clause cases. Analysts warn a ruling against the government would boost debt from about 100 to 169 billion dollars while gold bonds and contracts would be worth 169 percent of face value in devalued currency.

Doris Sharp 16 died en route to hospital after a car crash 13 miles west of Tulia. Her brother Frank 15 suffered a broken arm severe facial injuries and possible internal injuries. Passing motorists said the car struck a parked truck while returning from school. Parents Mr and Mrs Alvis Sharp live 16 miles west of town.

Four million trees will be planted next spring as the forest service begins the shelterbelt from Canada to the Texas Panhandle. The American Tree Association named 23 of 30 sites for 139000 trees in five mile by ten rod strips across the Dakotas Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma and Texas. Roosevelt endorsed the project and the work will use about 100 million seedlings in 1936 after an initial $1,000,000 1934 allotment.
A dry northerner is headed for the Panhandle Plains today. Temperatures are forecast to fall to about 25 this morning and to a new yearly low near 15 tonight. The storm moving from the Canadian Northwest is not expected to bring moisture. Cattle in exposed pastures may suffer briefly, but losses should be small.
Mrs. W. A. Johnson, 69, widow of Lieut. Gey W. A. Johnson, died at her Memphis home. She formerly published The Hall County Herald from 1923 to 1928 before its sale to The Memphis Democrat Publishing Company. Survived by daughter Mrs. Ray Bass of Memphis and son Earl Johnson of Los Angeles. Funeral arrangements pending.
Edward McFadden known as Father Tom surrendered in Chicago to await trial under Wisconsin anti machine gun law. The move leaves Tommy Touhy as the sole remaining leader of the gang that once ruled beer selling in Chicago area before later turning to kidnapping.
Collins of Kit Carson Colo was re-elected president for a fourth term of the American National Livestock Association at the Rapid City meeting last night. Hobart of Canadian Tex was chosen as second vice president.
