Governor Miriam Ferguson urged the fortieth Texas legislature to tax manufactured cigarettes chewing gum and cosmetics to relieve real estate taxes and raise gasoline tax to five cents a gallon. She argued real estate has shouldered most tax burdens and projected revenue from luxury taxes plus a higher gas tax could total about nineteen million dollars. The message also noted a nearly balanced state finances and called for restraint on appropriations.

Two Burned to Death in Residence Fire in Texas
A blaze at the Allen residence near Rockdale Texas killed Luther Allen 60 and his elderly father and seriously injured Floyd Allen 30. One Dead Two Injured In Oil Field Boiler Explosion

Woman dies of wounds in raid at Nellis home
