In Lubbock County jail a trio overpowered guards with improvised weapons and fled. Leby Lee Edmondson, 33, of Big Spring, was recaptured in the warehouse district. Federal prisoners James Kenneth Johnson, 31, of St Paul Arkansas, and Donald Ray Buchanan, 29, of Dallas, remain at large after escaping from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and being returned to custody. Police and bloodhounds hunted canyon country near Lubbock as reports of sightings flooded in.

In Hereford a 72 year old Amarillo man, Taylor H. Holland, was shot outside the Deaf Smith County courthouse as his son Taylor H. Holland Jr., 49, was arrested for murder. Holland Jr. is held without bond in Deaf Smith County jail after a 20 block chase in Southwest Amarillo. The elder Holland died at Deaf Smith County Hospital from a single 22 caliber shot. A reported long running family feud surrounded the case. Police found unspent cartridges matching the victim's wound on Holland Jr.'s person.
WOR radio helicopter crashed into a three story Queens building during a live traffic report. Pilot Frank McDermott, 36, leapt from the craft and died. two buildings ignited as observers reported the craft, Helicopter 710, owned by WOR, went down. The incident occurred mid broadcast with McDermott signing off moments earlier.
The New York market failed to sustain Thursday’s modest advance as profit taking dampened momentum before noon. The Dow dropped 1.93 to 923.53, with volume at 12.68 million and more decliners than advancers. Copper and auto shares showed early strength, butOverall, indicators moved into negative territory.
The Saturday Evening Post will expire on February 8 after losing about 5 million dollars in 1968 and predicting a 3 million dollar deficit this year. Ackerman became president in April 1968 after Perfect Film and Chemical loaned Curtis 5 million. The magazine cut circulation to 3.8 million to lure ads, but cancellations included Arkansas Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller and Ackerman himself.
