East and West AFL All Star players refuse to participate over racial discrimination in New Orleans. The action may force cancellation of the game slated for next Saturday.
Searchers found two bodies in a snow slide that buried four vehicles on a remote mountain highway 110 miles east of Vancouver. A girl and a young man remained missing as crews dug through mud and debris from the half mile wide slide.
The Justice Department asks a federal grand jury to indict 21 Mississippi men over the killings of James Chaney Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner. An alleged written confession from one suspect is cited as key evidence. Authorities say murder charges lie with state courts, and no current charges exist despite prior hearings.
AUSTIN UPI Barnes says he will be speaker of the 59th Texas Legislature after gaining pledges from 131 House members. At 26 he would be the youngest speaker, ahead of Reconstruction era record of 25, with 75 votes needed for election. He plans to add more names as he contacts lawmakers including Rep Henry Grover of Houston and notes Byron Tunnell resigned to join the Railroad Commission.
Shareholders of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad approved a merger with Union Pacific by an 8 to 1 margin at a special meeting. About 78 percent of outstanding shares voted yes while 297,580 opposed the deal. Court fights loom as Chicago and North Western signals possible action.
A 60 000 strong East Gulf Coast longshoremen strike began at 12 01 am due to confusion and misunderstanding. Ships were stranded as overtime efforts failed to avert the walkout while James J Reynolds and Willard Wirtz sought a settlement and President Johnson was kept informed. Fort Worth docks saw 30 ships worked Sunday but a heavy snowstorm halted all dock work by nine pm leaving 50 ships in port including six scheduled to sail.
The Defense Department said the US submarine Ethan Allen collided with the Norwegian freighter Octavian in the Mediterranean. Damage was negligible, no casualties, both ships continued on their missions after exchanging identifications. The Ethan Allen is a nuclear powered vessel carrying Polaris missiles and worth about 105 million dollars.
Testimony resumes Monday in a $4 million damage suit by four Midland men against Billie Sol Estes and others. The court heard a deposition from Harold E. Orr linking Estes to mortgage schemes and naming Robert E. Graham. Plaintiffs seek relief from liability on $13 million in mortgages. Heller Co. denies the allegations.
