For months residents of the Central Panhandle have watched contrails form behind jets. The article notes planes from Kirtland, Tinker, Altus, Fort Worth and other bases creating long icy trails, likening them to weather-control potential and calling pilots cloud-makers.

In a county jail chapel, Edward Baron hypnotized a 21 year old inmate before 150 inmates as part of Sheriff Lohman education program. The prisoner described Chicago burning in 1876 though the year given was 1871, and Baron noted he remains open to reincarnation proof while seeking stronger evidence. The session followed earlier demonstrations with group heat and cold effects.

A rare winter storm, described as possible only every five to ten years, hit the Southeast with Miami recording a record low of 42 and frost in the Everglades. Portland Maine stayed warmer at 44, while some Miami area farms faced up to 31 below freezing. Schools closed and farm damage was estimated up to 10 million dollars as temperatures dropped into the 20s and 30s.
Bas com Giles, former Land Commissioner, pleaded guilty to nine counts as an accomplice to felony theft in a veterans land transaction. Judge Charles O Betts sentenced him to six years on each count to run concurrently and to coincide with prior six year terms. Giles waived delay, appealed, and posted bond.
St Louis January 10 Emory University president Goodrich White told the Association of American Colleges that mass education could one day confer bachelor degrees on all who apply at a given age and stay out of jail. He warned presidents to address why graduates do not read and to balance education for all with excellence. He urged valuing education for its own sake and noted science remains vital for progress and security. Russell Kirk urged colleges to combat utilitarianism and preserve moral worth, stressing that judging a person by actions and performance is essential and that a professor’s character matters as much as what he teaches.
Panhandle Hereford Breeders Association met to plan their annual sale during the Amarillo Fat Stock Show. The group toured Tri-State Fair grounds and will hold an annual banquet Tuesday night January 24. The Amarillo Fat Stock Show rodeo opens Monday January 23 with eight performances and ticket prices ranging from 1 to 3 dollars.
Potter County Commissioners held a special session to hear 17 400 annually in requests from department heads for their employees. No action was taken. future consideration planned. Officials under Social Security from Jan 1. elected officials exempt. Child Welfare Board adds Dr Eugene Slater and Mrs Mary Ann Campbell replacing two retirees. Courtroom conversion discussed but no action.
Dr. Boyd Alexander reported A B Shoemake president of U S Trust and Guaranty Co showing signs of improvement after shooting himself Saturday night. If his condition holds for a few days he could recover despite seven million dollars owed to creditors.
The mother of Doris Jean Silver Ostreicher told reporters she arranged the illegal abortion that autopsy blamed for her daughter’s death on Aug 24. Mrs Gertrude Silver, indicted as an accessory, said her daughter demanded help and that she felt immense grief. The interview also references involvement by Mr Milton Schwartz and others in Melrose Park, Philadelphia.
