Hughes Faces Murder Trial In Death Here
Sam T. Hutton, 50, local painter, died after a fist fight in South Amarillo on September 1. J M Hughes of Amarillo will be tried for murder at Canyon next Thursday after a grand jury indictment. Hughes is free on $5,000 bond with a 60 member special venue for the jury. Hutton’s death followed heavy drinking at a house on an alley front in the south part of town. Edna Davis faces a liquor indictment. she was moved to Canyon jail then released on $2,500 bond and set for trial Monday. This grand jury marks Canyon’s first since the fatal melee.

Special to The News. In Lockney on January 10, Frank N. Ford and his wife narrowly escaped serious harm when a gas stove left burning in a closed room produced dangerous fumes. The pair awoke about 4 am suffering severe illness. the wife summoned a telephone operator who alerted a doctor. Both remain bedridden but are not expected to have serious results.

Bank robbery ends in death near Rogersville
In Rogersville Missouri on January 10 a bank raid ended with one robber killed in a gun battle two miles south of town after a posse of farmers confronted them. The other robber was captured. They abandoned their stalled automobile in the snow. Most of about $1000 stolen was recovered. The slain man wore a suit label bearing W. R. Davis from Springfield.
