Three amateur explorers from Cincinnati John Fraim Jim Brown and Jim Jordan were rescued from Eureka Cave in McCreary County Kentucky after spending about 16 hours underground. Brown suffered an ankle injury and was treated in Lexington before the group returned home.
John Lee reported seeing a blue jay a cardinal and a mockingbird in his neighborhood on Wednesday. Mason King and others claim these birds have remained feeding in his yard through winter alongside robins and numerous finches.

The Senate defeated a bipartisan antifilibuster bid and advanced a Johnson proposal to curb debates with two thirds of those voting, while an amendment by Senator Douglas proposing a simple majority to end debate was labeled a gag rule. Mr. and Mrs. 8 F Flores of Tulia deed 17 176 acres in Moore and Sherman counties to Wayland Baptist College as a life estate for Mr Flores. The gift, announced by President A Hope Owen, is among the largest to a Texas Baptist college. Tom Parrish led college representation in Tulia for the signing.

In Long Beach California a pharmacist Marian Buckmaster repelled two bandits during a hold up at a drug store. She hurled bottles including iodine cough syrup and mouth wash to drive them off while cashier Marlene Hair was wounded in the toe and hospitalised. The cash remained in the drawer after the chaotic incident.

Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan told Secretary of State Dulles that Moscow does not demand a West withdrawal from Berlin but favors new Allied proposals to ease the crisis. Officials said the outline came in a 95 minute meeting and was not in the aide memoire. State Department confirmed the memorandum reflected oral talks but did not confirm specific proposal details.
U S District Judge Frank M Johnson Jr overruled Circuit Judge George C Wallace and ordered him to permit federal agents to inspect voter registration records in Barbour and Bullock counties. A hearing was set for next Wednesday to enforce compliance and discuss possible contempt if Wallace does not obey.
