Gipsy Smith preached twice to large crowds, with about six thousand five hundred attending the afternoon service and a similar number vying for space at the evening gathering. Many were turned away as the venue filled beyond capacity.

Spanish government forces celebrate Teruel capture after an 18 day siege that left about 6,000 casualties. Gen Juan Rojo led the operation while insurgent forces pressure the city outskirts and denounce garrison failures.
Prospectors H. L. Baker and Jim Andrews report a gold ore vein north of Amarillo near Boden on the Fort Worth and Denver Railway. Assays show gold per ton from 4.90 to 8.50 with copper content up to 32 percent and cadmium present. copper may yield the better profits. Baker, raised with Oklahoma Indians, traced signs etched on rock near Tascosa and Chalk, following a legend of Indian signs and a “Ransom Trail” to the ore. The find draws interest from smelters in Amarillo, Dallas, El Paso, and Denver and may lead to more exploration and potential mining.
Japanese dispatches claim about half a million Chinese soldiers were in retreat across the North China front as freezing weather and bombardment wore on troops. In Shantung near the Lunghai line Japanese columns close in on the lifeline railway while both sides endure harsh conditions and mass troop movements.
Representative Patman of Texas announced plans to introduce two measures to curb unfair branch and holding company banking. One would bar any corporation from owning stock in an insured bank, returning banks to community ownership. The second would require insured banks with branches to publish their resources and liabilities at each branch location.
Berlin reports indicate about 50 Protestant pastors were quietly paroled over Christmas by Nazi authorities and need not return to jail. Thirteen prisoners remain, including Rev. Martin Niemoeller, with no word on his case. A Catholic bishop's pastoral letter urged sending children to Catholic schools for the new term.
Washington officials outlined a proposal to build a new women’s prison akin to Alcatraz. Locations under consideration include eastern Kentucky, East Texas, or Braggs Oklahoma with site inspections already done. President Roosevelt seeks 1.5 million dollars for three new penal institutions including a women’s prison.
Haley was killed when a train hit his car in East Amarillo Bays. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM at the N S Griggs chapel with burial in Slane Cemetery. Pallbearers named include Hall Mad ford Jack Hootem Ross Renfro Francis Popham Hiram Sweeney and Jess Hill.
Amarillo will send its first helium shipment to Germany within two weeks creating 2 350 000 cubic feet on the Dessau in port at Houston. If regulations are approved and a price set by President Roosevelt the full program calls for 17 000 000 cubic feet. Officials note the underground storage keeps helium safe and Amarillo's supply could last 50 years with a 24 000 000 cubic feet annual capacity.
Funeral services for Max Herklotz a World War II veteran were conducted at the N S Griggs chapel with Dr R Thomsen officiating. Burial is set for Memorial Park Cemetery at 10 o clock this morning after he died in an Amarillo hospital following a gunshot incident at his home.
Lewis Hendryx 22 of Corpus Christi died from injuries after an auto crash near New Brainsels. Four others were injured in the same incident.
Washington Jan 9 Administration leaders push to defeat Ludlow's constitutional amendment for a people’s vote before any foreign war. Representative Boland says passage has no chance as House may decide tomorrow on taking up the measure amid a rapid canvass showing a good working majority against action. Several peace groups urge full debate and passage. Rep. Pish accuses opponents of misleading propaganda.
Snow covered most of the Midwest in the heaviest fall of the winter. Traffic slowed on slippery roads and poor visibility challenged travel as meteorologists expected the storm to continue through tonight and then clear for most areas tomorrow.
Washington dispatch reports House leaders plan to rush naval expansion legislation ahead of corporate tax revision. Presidentside push urges immediate authorization for a larger fleet, while financing for vessels to be built later remains undecided. Two battleships are under construction and funds are sought to start two more in the coming year.
First annual convention of the Chamber of Commerce Managers Association of West Texas will be held in Big Spring March 18 and 19. Officers and directors announced include W. A. Rep. Metcalfe of Ninety-first district will not seek another House term. He plans to run for the Twenty-fifth senatorial district seat held by E. M. Davis of Brownwood. He departed for Austin to address emergency matters before the nepotism committee. The committee is to meet Monday. Metcalfe is in his fourth House term.
Colonel C. H. Sharman, former Amarillo resident and Union Pacific engineer, died at his Fayetteville home Saturday at 96. He helped build the transcontinental route with army protection during Indian threats, served in the Civil War, and was an active Presbyterian officer. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Jenee Altizer.
