He told Roosevelt that cooperation between the U S and the USSR would have great historical significance for world peace. The President welcomed closer ties and genuine mutual cooperation.
Paris reports France grants the United States preferential tariff treatment under new quotas. American imports face no drastic bargaining and retain the 1932 quota level, while imports from other nations face higher withholding to pressure purchases of French goods. The U.S. quota on American goods is effectively quadrupled from 1932.
About 1500 livestockmen from the western cattle states meet in Albuquerque to discuss processing taxes public lands and tariffs. The American National Livestock Association opens its session with leaders warning of a major convention debate over a cattle and sheep processing tax. Some support the tax while others oppose it and vow to fight it at the meeting.
LA report states Fay Webb Vallee filed a separate maintenance action against Rudy Vallee accusing him of intimate relations with Alice Faye and two Jane Does. A house guest is under arrest on harboring charges.
Two youths from Oklahoma one from Louisiana and one from Texas were chosen by the gulf division committee. The recipients are Daniel J. Boorstin 19 of Tulsa George C. McGhee an Oklahoma graduate Willeroy Wells of New Orleans and Joseph Elmer Hawkins of Waco Texas.
The U S Supreme Court ruled the indictments against Bishop James Cannon Jr and Ada Burroughs valid for alleged violations of election law in 1928. Cannon and Burroughs will be tried on failure to report contributions to the anti Smith committee. the court did not rule on guilt. Justice McReynolds dissented.
Frank Crutchfield of White Deer faces murder charges in the shooting death of Police Captain Preston Burnam. An examining trial in Potter County jail was not held as scheduled, with grand jury action possible January 22 and an anticipated trial after the new 47th district court term. Dallas County grand jury declined to indict 72 year old former Texas Ranger J I Mitchell in the fatal shooting of 30 year old gangster Roy Archer who died after attempting to invade Mitchells home. Archer had been indicted for the murder of Deputy Sheriff J W Puller in June 1932 and Mitchell was free on a 750 dollar bond on a murder charge at the time of the incident.

A committee of unemployed in Harding County New Mexico wired protests against politics and irregularities in hiring for civil works through relief projects. The protest was sent to Interior Secretary Ickes and M A Otero Sr chairman of New Mexico public works board. Federal sources say an investigation is underway.
