Benjamin Ni Duke, who rose from tobacco peddler to a major industrial figure, died in his Fifth Avenue mansion after a long illness at age 73. His fortune, estimated over 60 million, funded railroads, banking, cotton, real estate and philanthropy including gifts to Trinity and Guilford colleges. A funeral is planned in Durham, with a special train carrying the body from New York to Duke University for in state viewing and services.
In New York on January 8 a blaze at St. Malachy’s parochial school in Brooklyn forced front entrance evac. Three nuns and six other teachers guided about 200 children to safety after the fire started in a chimney and blocked the main exit, with Sister St. Claire, the principal, leading the response.
The navy dirigible Los Angeles launched from Lakehurst at 8 45 p m on a 2000 mile coastal flight south to Florida. It will attend the Miami Municipal airport dedication and head to St Josephs Bay to join the Patoka. Lt Cmdr Charles F Rosendahl leads 45 crew. Return date depends on weather. may operate several days from the Patoka near Appalachicola.
Amarillo officials learned that Texas Air Transport, Inc. will base a three-line passenger network here. Silliman Evans and Tom Hardin plan talks with city leaders, with a public announcement promised after arrival. Officials praise the move as a boon for municipal aviation and Northwest Texas publicity.
The Panhandle Highway association urged immediate legislative action on a statewide highway bond issue. They endorsed the plan in principle, reserved stance on Moody committee recommendations, and backed a four cent gas tax to sustain the current program until bond funds are available. The group also proposed fund distribution to counties and urged reinstating Highway No. 117 from Spearman to the Oklahoma line, linking five federal routes.
In Oklahoma City the regular biennial session opened with a coalition of insurgent Democrats and Republicans seizing control of the house. James Nance of Cotton County was elected speaker after Allen Street resigned, as the coalition adopted rules to appoint committees on committees, sidelining the previous power of the speaker. The insurgent bloc, augmented by GOP gains, held as many as 106 votes in the 106 member house.
T SImons secretary of the Texas Jersey Cattle club leads the annual convention in Amarillo with JW Ridgeway from Mabletoe Creameries Fort Worth serving as director of the American Jersey Cattle club and toastmaster at the Herring hotel banquet tonight.
In Clarendon Texas the Owens ranch of about 35097 acres across Bridgeee Hall counties was sold by J W Owens to the Slaughter company led by Bob Slaughter and R L Slaughter. The deal reportedly exceeded 235000 dollars and was a cash transaction as cattle movement begins on the ranch. Owens remains a major Panhandle landowner with around 35 sections.
Vive Georgetown men, part of a state highway construction gang, were injured when a truck driven by a Mexican from Austin struck them near Hutto Texas. The driver is jailed facing four counts of aggravated assault and one count of operating a vehicle without a chauffeur's license.
In Austin a senate caucus before the session rejected Senator Thom as B Love of Dallas proposed to bar any senator who indulges in drinking intoxicating liquor sold or furnished in violation of prohibition laws. Senator Archie Parr presided and called for a viva voce vote, with Love vowing to push the measure to the senate floor early in the session.
Jersey cattle breeders from across Texas and national leaders arrive in Amarillo for the Texas Jersey Cattle Club annual meeting in a West Texas setting. The two day event includes sessions at the Merring hotel beginning at 10 o clock with an educational program and addresses aimed at members and attendees.
A light mist rose in the evening and showers were noted around 6:50 yesterday. The day had been warm, with only a trace of moisture on the gauge. Forecasters expected fair skies and warmer conditions this morning as clouds lingered through the night.

W S Barron of Bryan elected speaker over W J Montgomery 7 to BY as Woodward and Ruesek lead the senate. Large galleries, strong attendance, and initial bills including a 456 million appropriation package marked opening day.
