A California city approved a modified mass condemnation for a 79 acre downtown redevelopment. Elderly residents objected to forced sales, but the council unanimously adopted changes, with praise for a council that rules with heart and head.
The First State Bank robbery in Hollis left Wanda Masters dead and Janna Robinson critically wounded after two suspects stormed the bank at opening time. Boss Emory Crow was pistol whipped and beaten. a teller Elton Coppage survived. Suspects fled with undisclosed cash, one arrested near Hollis and another captured at a roadblock on I 40 near Erick.
Pennsylvania Governor Milton Shapp samples milk from an oversized goblet during a preview tour of the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. The event showcases state agriculture and food production ahead of the annual exhibition.
James K. Heller, 23, of 2727 Civic Circle, was arrested on suspicion of felony theft over $200 and filing a false police report after he claimed an armed bandit shot him and stole $2,000 from the West Amarillo restaurant. Police seized $2,000 and a .22 rifle at his apartment.
In November the Federal Reserve reported a $402 million drop in consumer credit, the largest since 1942 and the first monthly cut since 1970. Car loans, personal loans, and home improvement debts fell while credit card use rose for extended purchases.
Washington AP report states the Treasury accepted 750000 ounces from 2 million offered, with bids at 153 dollars per ounce or higher. If all valid bids were accepted, sales would total 954800 ounces, yielding about 100 million dollars. Eligible bidders to receive notices by phone or telegram for pickup in Denver, San Francisco, or New York.
The auction in General Services Administration offices drew bids mostly from foreign banks and U S branches of foreign banks for large gold amounts. The Dresdner Bank bid up to 174 an ounce for over 400 000 ounces while Herff Jones Co of Indianapolis bid 185 per ounce for 2 800 ounces. Officials say most gold sold to foreigners would stay in the United States for domestic use. Americans show limited interest, with a $153 cutoff set to balance fair price and domestic needs.
The AEC reported a plutonium contamination incident at Kerr-McGee Crescent involving Karen Silkwood who died in a car crash. Investigators found contamination on Silkwood, her apartment, and a coworker, with signs of contrivance but no evidence of who altered samples. The agency says the amount was not weapon grade and poses little public danger.
