Texas bank deposits closed 1968 at record levels with Dallas leading the state at 5.204 billion, Houston approaching with 5.015 billion, Fort Worth posting 1.546 billion amid optimism for a continued favorable climate into the first quarter and cautious growth ahead.
The Park and Recreation Department uses winter weather to prune Ellwood Park trees. Assistant forester Floyd Kkeesee feeds cut branches into a machine turning them into 2 inch slivers as workers remove dead limbs.

Dr W A Maddox notes an open season for Aoudad sheep in New Mexico February 6 to 16 with forty permits issued by landowners and seven allocated to Maddox at a price of 100 dollars. Texas season ends tonight. Aoudads released in Palo Duro rim rock and northeastern New Mexico ranch country years ago.

A second Allegheny Airlines Convair 580 crash near Bradford Pennsylvania killed at least eight with seventeen survivors. The Flight 737 from Washington crashed onto Pine Acres golf course nine miles south of Bradford. NTSB reactivated a 10 member team because of the similar incident.
About 1000 minority students and striking teachers disrupted the campus as classes reopened at San Francisco State College. The San Francisco Labor Council later sanctioned the teachers strike, signaling further campus unrest after riots and vandalism since November 6. The Black Students Union had called a preceding strike.
Amarillo and Panhandle banks closed 1968 with record deposits. Dec 31 totals show Amarillo area deposits at $319,272,713 and Canyon banks reaching $339,740,280, with fourteen regional banks reporting $190,774,908. Loan totals also rose to record highs.
Gov Connally appointed Jerome Johnson Amarillo attorney to the State Senior College Board of Regents for a six year term. The Port Arthur native and Amarillo lawyer will resign from the Amarillo College Board after eight years. Also named were Dee J. Kelly of Fort Worth and Bernard G. Johnson of Houston to the board.
Cities Service lost its strike exempt status Monday after pickets gathered at the Pampa and Lefors natural gas plants and district offices in Pampa. About 2,500 area workers, mainly at Phillips Petroleum facilities, may extend the walkout sought by the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers union and Local 331. union leaders warn the strike could last lengthy. Phillips cost estimate for union demands runs about $2 per hour per worker.
Secretary of Defense designates three Republican civilian chiefs to lead the Navy Air Force and Army under President Nixon. John H. Chafee becomes Navy secretary, Robert C. Seamans Jr. heads the Air Force, and Stanley R. Resor remains Army secretary to provide continuity. Confirmation pending.
A 3 month old Boston bull pup chewed Mrs. Susan Allen's wallet scattering money credit cards and her driver license. She said she wouldn’t yell or get mad thanking the pup for returning the billfold found on her driveway.
Senator John Tower of Texas was elected unanimously by 43 GOP senators as chairman of the GOP Senate Campaign Committee. He will lead fundraising and support for Senate candidates while expanding outreach using modern communications and media techniques. He joins the policy committee headed by Senator Gordon Allott.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell sharply to 937.84 by 1 p.m. down 14.05 points as NYSE losses outweighed gains by about 400 issues. The decline marked the biggest drop since June 5, 1967, with forecasts calling for a possible 1,000 level but a continued slide since December.
