ENA reports a growing cold front and thinning snowpack across the Tri-State region near Dalhart as a winter storm moves through. Local weather crews warn of continued chill and slick roads through the day.
Snow covered eastern New Mexico and wide areas of the Panhandle and South Plains with depths from one to eight inches. The Tuesday storm forced school closings and glazed highways, extending from southeastern New Mexico across north Texas Oklahoma into Arkansas and Tennessee. Widespread snow and cold lingered with temperatures in the 20s and 30s, as forecasts expected additional accumulations up to six to eight inches before ending late Tuesday night or today.
Forecasters in Amarillo expect an eight degree overnight low as snow ends and fog forms over the city. Snow depth reached 6.1 inches with drifting minimal due to ground cover and calm wind. Temperatures at 4 pm reached 22, 9:36 pm dropped to 17, and highs were forecast near 28 with travel hazards and school closures reported across the region.
The report notes Amarillo had sun four of five days in 1960 with 3 pm readings showing 13 C or Fahrenheit unclear, winds from the west at 71 mph in Dallas and 24 mph in Amarillo with cloudy skies in Amarillo Houston Dallas and Oklahoma City.
Three Texas cities Houston Dallas and Amarillo were named national transportation centers under a Post Office Department plan to assure next day first class letter mail delivery nationwide. Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield said the plan, submitted to Congress, will start implementation immediately.
The 86th Congress begins its second session with a priority on civil rights battles and the budget. President Eisenhower will address a joint session, outline aims for a Democratic Congress, and submit budget and economic reports in January. Washington AP reports Sen. Stuart Symington drew a full house at a news conference as Congress preopens. Reporters focused on presidential hopes, missiles gaps with the Soviet Union and Symington’s avowed or unavowed candidacy. The piece notes his tight mouth and a digression about a dentist.
Business leaders praise the steel strike settlement as a key to heavy car and industry output in 1960 while warning that wage gains may push prices higher. Executives from Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Boston call the agreement a confidence builder for a record production year though some fear inflationary price effects.
