The Associated Press reports Texas banks show record end-year deposits with Houston and Dallas leading growth at $23 million increases in six months. Dallas deposits total $256,055,393, up $23,285,177 from last June 30. Fort Worth $95,072,977, up from $82,378,555, while overall resources top $285,035,496.
Congress convened to begin work on an embargo to halt an air cargo for Madrid Loyalists in the Spanish civil war. Administration leaders plan a rapid, unanimous push. Robert Cuse and Richard L Dineley, both with export licenses, seek to ship planes and arms despite State Department opposition.

BISMARCK, ND Jan 6 Gov William Langer announced he would sign a moratorium on mortgage foreclosures He did not give any details about the measure or its scope.
At year end 1936 the three Amarillo banks report deposits totaling 18 140 558 34 up from 14 905 073 35 a year earlier a gain of 3 235 464 99. American National Bank 1 857 345 62 Amarillo National Bank 8 807 973 13 First National Bank 7 475 219 59. On the year 1936 bank deposits climbed in Abilene Corpus Christi and Corsicana with gains of 15 582 and 3 935 461 and 394 237 respectively while Waco reached 20 663 884 up from 20 090 738 in 1935 Nineteen banks across Cameron Hidalgo Willacy and Starr Counties are noted in the report.
The Parr Construction Company secured the contract to remodel the Allen Early building at 706 Polk Street. Work starts Monday with C. R. Anthony Co. opening a new store by March 1. The Palo Duro Furniture Co. formerly occupied the building after a closeout sale.
Coast guard cutter sighted wreckage believed to be from the missing Hamilton Field bomber nine miles north of here. Army officials assume Reserve Lieut. Herbert F. Knieriem of Modesto and Private Hartley Roberts died when the craft dived into the sea and could not be recovered.
Three youths who admitted causing the Cottonbelt passenger train wreck near Corley Bowie County on December 15 were paroled to their parents. Court attaches could not say if the cases would be tried. the wreck killed the fireman.
Mississippi officers hunt two men who abducted Solon Snowden an 18 year old Shreveport youth and W J Ferguson a Jackson filling station attendant after tying them and tossing them from Snowden's car near Pelahatchie. The pair escaped in the car toward Meridian and were later freed by Snowden and Ferguson who walked to a farmer's home and were taken to Jackson.
A jury mainly of small businessmen and farmers was selected in M Calester Oklahoma to hear Archie Herring among six Mc Alester penitentiary inmates charged with murdering a prison guard during a May 13 break.
Amarillo and West Texas outlook calls for Wednesday fair and colder with strong northwest winds. Panhandle and northeast New Mexico expect colder conditions and possible snow. Western areas should be partly cloudy with livestock warnings northward. Hourly temperatures in Amarillo show highs near 50s and lows around 40s, with recent records in the 30s and 40s.

Grand jury returns two indictments against James Pred Fogg for assault with intent to murder and theft of an automobile in the beating and robbery of E F King in Amarillo on December 30. Fogg is jailed in Randall County with bonds totaling 5000 dollars. Additional indictments name Ross Lancaster and Toliver Towles on related charges.
Newark jurist Arthur T. Vanderbilt was nominated for president of the American Bar Association by state delegates. The ABA will elect officers at its annual convention the week of September 27. Other nominations include David A. Simmons of Houston Texas for the fifth circuit board of governors.
Four maritime union men were convicted of second degree murder for the slaying of George Alberts chief engineer aboard the freighter Point Lobos on March 22. The jury reached its verdict after five hours and 40 minutes of deliberation.
An early morning blaze engulfed a three story apartment and store building in Indianapolis, killing one man and injuring four others who suffered serious smoke inhalation.
Berlin reports an official decree and a newspaper editorial call on Germans to stop cultivating a taste for butter and to use streetcars instead of buses, signaling a shift in daily transit and diet during the period.
Mrs. Lee Corder, 26, a waitress, was shot and killed in a Burnet cafe. Moments later her estranged husband died from a self inflicted pistol wound. Kate Joy of Blanco witnessed the event and said the couple had been separated for months. Survivors include her brother Ted Lesley and her mother in Sonora.
Newark Ohio January 5 18 year old Onie Wheeler denied kidnapping accusations after returning home stating she left voluntarily with Arthur Spence 32 a boilermaker. Sheriff said her husband filed abduction charge when friends reported Spence forced them into a car Saturday night and compelled Mrs Wheeler to stay.
Ballet Russe of Monte Carlo tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at City Drug No 1 on Polk Street. Hours are 9 am to 5 pm with reservations through Miss Lois Black at The News Globe office. Advance demand is strong with top seats at 2.75 and other prices listed. International stars, large orchestra and scenery travel with the company. Amarillo is cited as its smallest city booked.
In January 6A Harry Slim Reeves ex convict member of the gang that blew a gangster companion near Sioux Falls drew a 40 year prison term in district court. Sheriff William Tice and a deputy captured Reeves near here last night after his confession of seeing Harold Baker killed by a dynamite blast. Reeves admitted taking part in a December 22 jewelry robbery with William Nesbeth and Lee Bradley and then pleaded guilty to receive sentence.
In Peiping on January 5 a flood of self styled doctors and an anti narcotics hospital advertised rapid cures for narcotics addiction as government orders to execute addicts approach. Advertisements in columns of Chinese newspapers touted seven hour cures and self proclaimed physicians profited from anxious users seeking quick relief before executions begin.
Vatican City January reports say Cardinal heads of congregations were asked not to leave Rome as Pope Pius XII, aged 79, rests after breathing difficulties from asthma. Doctors say he was raised to a sitting position and given injections to stimulate kidney action every four days.
Madrid reports its bovine population being wiped out by Fascist bombs. Two cows were wounded and a third killed by shelling in the yard of the Chilean embassy. Earlier, Dutch cows near the Dutch legation died and six more cattle suffered shock.
Rescue parties battled deep snow to reach about 200 people trapped in northern Arizona. The Civilian Conservation Corps camp with 157 youths from Oklahoma and Texas, in the Hualapai mountains near Kingman, faced worsening conditions as a new storm warning arrived. Albert J. Sergeant Brackettville city clerk was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in his automobile near the pasture gate of his ranch about 30 miles from Brackettville Del Rio report states.
A treasury report projects that if relief spending continues at recent pace, President Roosevelt will require about 700 million dollars more for the current fiscal year ending June 30. The budget message is expected to request an appropriation to bolster depleted funds, with possible transfers from other agencies shaping the final amount.
Constable Neal Polk reports the arrest of Tessie Wilson alias Mrs Lorcan Simpson on a fugitive murder warrant tied to the October 1 1935 slaying of Policeman Clyde Appling in Northport Alabama. Wilson waived extradition as Alabama authorities were notified. Details remain scarce and Appling was reportedly shot with a rifle.
The Texas Highway Commission approved paving 21 miles of Highway 60 in Deaf Smith County. W. J. Van London estimates caliche and asphalt costs at 100000 dollars and plans call for detailing specifications for contract award next month. The commission also authorized funding for Palmer County grading and drainage and approved the project in chairman’s absence.

By sundown a cold, brisk wind from the Rocky Mountains arrives, followed by a night drop to 10 to 15 degrees with possible snow in northern Panhandle, while the Plains region avoids extreme cold for a few days. A low of 22 degrees was forecast for Amarillo.
