Illinois officials led by Atty. Gen. William Scott and Gov. Richard Ogilvie announce a new cash and securities board worth about 700000 found in the Paul Powell estate. The total now exceeds 1500000 in unexplained assets as the Illinois Bureau of Investigation begins a tax and inheritance inquiry. Executor Rendleman had earlier found over 800000 hidden in Powell’s Springfield hotel suite and office.
The tri state region endures a brutal cold snap after a blizzard that dumped 4 inches of snow and created 2 to 4 foot drifts. A 16 year old Shamrock High student and his father seek a temporary restraining order against Shamrock Independent School District and trustees to allow the boy to wear his chosen hair style. The suit, filed by Amarillo attorney Charles Fairweather, names the district board president Dr E Byron Range superintendent Boyd Williams and principal Jamie Goad as defendants. A hearing is set for February 13 before U S District Judge Halbert O Woodward and the case was aided by the local ACLU.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy and cold conditions in Amarillo with two of four 1971 days sunny so far. High today in the upper 20s, low tonight near 15, and a southerly wind at 8 to 18 mph.
A gas explosion on Meridian Avenue near Lincoln Road in Miami Beach destroyed Manny's Restaurant and the Circle Blueprint Co. killing an unidentified elderly woman. Police said four officers and 60 civilians were injured, with five in Mt Sinai Hospital. Firefighters searched rubble for more victims as residents recounted the blast’s sudden, devastating impact.
