Dr. Fred Schwarz an anti-Communist crusader from Australia addressed the Texas Legislature in Austin. He heads the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade and argued that capitalism is dying, producing selfish people unable to act with honesty or intelligence to survive.
The Civil War note lists Grant’s horses Cincinnati Egypt and Jeff Davis from Mississippi, mentions Lee’s Traveller, and recalls two falls Grant suffered when riding during the war. It cites no memoirly horse identifications and notes Traveller’s fame and preservation at Washington and Lee University.
Mr and Mrs Jet Carter of Alanreed say their community is not a ghost town. They recall Alameed's 350 past population now 102, and claim they know every resident. They toured with Mr and Mrs A J Walley from McLean and shared apples and gospel singing during a Amarillo trip.

In Havana on January 4 1961 American diplomats lowered the Stars and Stripes as most staff sailed home ending six decades of U S Cuba relations. U S Charge Braddock remained with a few aides to wrap up affairs while 15 dockside demonstrations occurred and Cuban officials blocked Braddock from boarding.
Newsmen were barred from the scene as a ferry bid farewell to the U S embassy staff amid a break in diplomatic relations. Travel agents in Havana reported rising departures by Americans, planes booked solid, and no exact figures available for how many of the 67 embassy personnel left. Forty eight militia women armed with Czech automatics positioned around the embassy to deter hostile demonstrations. Officials said the militia women were sent by the government to prevent unrest.
Laos signals openness to reactivating the International Control Commission as Britain and Russia seek a revived peace effort. Parliament backs Premier Prince Boun Oum, while government hails capture of a key central Laos road junction from the Communists. Deputy Foreign Minister Chao Sopsaina says Laos will consider a formal call for ICC revival.
New York January 4 The stock market rose sharply with broad gains across steel, motor, aircraft and rail shares. The AP 60 stock average jumped 3.20 to 222.60 the largest since September 24, 1959. Dow gained 11.24 to 621.49 with 8023 stocks advancing.

A state charter for a new Canyon bank named Randall County Bank has been filed with the State Banking Board in Austin. No hearing date is set pending board investigation. R. E. Lewis of Amarillo is named correspondent and president design, W. T. Oliver of Amarillo as chairman, Morris Hill of Leeders as vice president and cashier, with a proposed board including Oliver and Lewis.

Borger city commissioners ordered a full investigation into an alleged Christmas night beating of Raymond Bybee at the city jail after Amarillo attorney Harold Ochsner protested on his behalf. Bybee, founder of Bybee and Sons Furniture, was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Lieutenant Gene Bristow was named as the officer accused, with Borger officer Dub Cates present.
Jarvis G. Turner, 72, of San Pedro, California, cited for driving without a license, won a suspended sentence after the judge noted his clean record and that he had bought a bicycle license since the arrest.
