In 1935 the Panhandle oil field valued production at 55.72 million dollars with a 16.8 million dollar payroll to 14,400 workers. Total recovery reached 253.98 million barrels, including 21.57 million barrels mined in 1935. Natural gasoline and carbon black led other product values.
J P Harrison new manager of four Texas Consolidated theaters arrives in Amarillo from Waco to boost Panhandle image. He criticizes downstate talk of cold weather and joins a push to counter propaganda while taking over after Will R Winch moves to El Paso. He is a longtime Waco theater figure.
Crosson flies serum plane through 42 below weather to deliver life saving serum to Fairbanks Alaska amid scarlet fever outbreak. He completed an 800 mile round trip from Juneau in five and a half hours stopping briefly to load the serum. The city hospital was full with suspected or diagnosed cases as two doctors labored to treat patients.
Soil conservation officials propose a special regional body to combat erosion in the 1935 dust bowl. The region covers the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles Southeastern Colorado Southwestern Kansas and Eastern New Mexico with H. H. Finnell slated as regional conservator to oversee wind erosion control efforts.
Rep. W E Pope of Corpus Christi proposed an investigation into political economy doctrines taught at the University of Texas. He said he had heard that certain UT faculty members are teaching rank communism.
Mollie Reiswig of Beaver County Oklahoma died after a cattle train struck the Reiswig farm truck 12 miles east of Perryton. Husband John and son Ira were hospitalized with injuries. Ira suffered a broken leg and arm, John head injuries and other cuts. Blamed were cardboard window replacements that limited visibility. The farm home lies about 20 miles northeast.
Mrs. C. C. Owens, 20, died in a Corsicana hospital from head and face burns after she fell into a fireplace at her Roane County farm home. Her family found her unconscious beside the blaze after briefly leaving the room. Survived by her parents, a three year old daughter, three brothers and two sisters.
Rome reports fliers killed by Ethiopians as Italy bombs Ethiopia with thousands of bombs injuring Ethiopians and an American hospital unit. Ethiopia asks the League of Nations for a war crimes inquiry while a European Red Cross worker dies after the Dolo attack.
Mrs. W. R. McCarty aged 63, mother of John McCarty publisher of the Dalhart Texan, died at 8:30 AM from blood poisoning stemming from a Christmas Eve cut on her right thumb. Funeral services set for 2:30 PM at Peeples Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. L. D. Mitchell and Rev. Felix.
Attorney General Homer S. Cummings asked Congress for broader federal powers in his annual report. He urged firearms registration authority and noted 40 convictions in 1935 under federal anti kidnapping laws. Keenan praised 1934 crime laws in the criminal division.
New York report states an elderly recluse and his sister in law died of starvation in a barren icy home with a $30,000 fortune. Mrs Anna Cloutier aged 60 was found dead in an unheated room. Ademee Cloutier aged 60 was comatose in an adjoining room. police suspect both failed to feed or warm themselves.
State Sen. Roy Sanderford of Belton declares candidacy for governor on a platform to slash government expenses and implement a three percent retail sales tax to fund state operations. He frames himself as Fer guson’s Senate ally aiming to defeat Gov. James V. Allred, who is expected to seek a second term.
Los Angeles report says grand jury investigators split on cause of Thelma Todd death in a beach garage on December 15. Central figure’s information points to death by own action to mislead as accidental, with majority of eighteen grand jurors favoring that theory.

Governor O K Allen warned against election theft while threatening to mobilize guardsmen if officials fail to run a fair vote. Anti administration factions cheer a federal probe into election machinery and fear a provisional government with federal inspectors if needed. Thousands of Long supporters rallied alleging federal interference and vote buying in anti Long campaigns. The governorship and Longs Senate seat are the central prizes in the primary, seen as a de facto election in the one Party state.
Dallas January 4 state liquor control board agents conducted a second raid on the St. Regis Bar less than a day after seizing liquor and arresting two men L. D. Story and E. J. Buchanan were charged under the prohibition of sale of liquor by the drink. Three other downtown resorts were raided yesterday with promise of daily raids by head agent F. O. Goens.
Sherman January 4 officers failed to locate two men who kidnapped Dallas motorcycle policeman R. J. Luther. Luther was held captive for hours and left tied in a Sherman area schoolhouse as authorities hunted the fugitives overnight and watched Red River bridges for signs.
Secretary Ickes assails Roosevelt administration critics in Rochester, charging they push surtax cuts for multimillionaires and sales taxes that hit the poor hardest. He says a sales tax is a reversed graduated income tax, bearing most on those least able to pay.
The Tulsa County Grand Jury, after three weeks probing commercialized vice, charged the sheriff with inefficiency and returned four true bills.
