P. D. McDonald of 208 Mississippi suffered lacerations and burns when a gasoline stove exploded at Panhandle Welding Shop 1218 West Third. The blast occurred about 7:30 pm and McDonald operated the shop amid reported air pumping by a nearby resident.
In Amarillo and across the Panhandle the ice and snow created treacherous roads and phone delays. A Canyon man, Lloyd Franklin Johnson, was crushed to death when a car skidded into his vehicle. Ranchers report improved wheat prospects but warn feeding difficulties and possible protein shortages if storms persist.

A 55 year old man from Dimmitt, H H Houtchens, suffered a broken hip and arm after a downtown fall and was taken to Amarillo in good condition last night. In Matador, 15 year old Charles Robert Keith was injured after slipping on ice and hitting a curb while fleeing from school to the lunchroom.
Judge Marvin Jones of Amarillo urged a bipartisan probe into malfeasance in public office and proposed an outstanding prosecutor from each major party to lead the effort. He spoke to Amarillo High School students during a Christmas holiday visit before returning to Washington.
The British tug Turmoil reached the crippled Flying Enterprise but darkness and the ship’s list delayed tow-line fastening. Captain Kurt Carlsen has clung to the deck for six days awaiting tow and rescue as preparations begin to tow the vessel. The US destroyer Weeks remains on standby to warn shipping and aid Carlson if needed.
In the North Atlantic off England's tip the Isbrandtsen freighter capsized and rode on its side as Captain Carlsen, 37, clung aboard for six days. The US Navy destroyer John W Weeks relayed coffee and supplies after three tries, while Carlsen remained hopeful the Flying Enterprise would endure the gale. He spoke of loneliness but praised the crew and his family in Woodbridge, New Jersey.
