The third Congress under the Roosevelt Administration will convene this week to push an embargo on arms shipments to Spain and tackle domestic issues including a proposed constitutional amendment on labor questions. Committees move to enact the embargo swiftly, landlocking a 2.3 million dollar airplanes shipment already approved by the State Department.
Shrapnel and artillery strikes hit central Madrid wounding pedestrians while an artillery duel rages at Villa Verde on the western front. Fascist planes fly over but do not drop bombs as preparations mount for a large offensive aided by international volunteers.
Police records recount a fight between 16 year olds Daniel Sieger and William Antkowiak over their mothers cooking. A knife flashed and Antkowiak was stabbed in the head, run two blocks to home, and treated by physicians with a chance of recovery. Sieger was charged with assault and stabbing.
The Portales region, once a water stop for cattle drives, grows into a diversified economic center in Roosevelt County. Portales Valley produces sweet potatoes and tomatoes while dairying, poultry, creameries, and a canning factory bolster income. Large storage for sweet potatoes and a major buttermilk plant reflect regional industry growth.
London reports that Italy guaranteed Britain's request by pledging to maintain the integrity of Spain's territories. The pledge accompanied the Rome signing of the Mediterranean treaty which aims to foster peace and stable navigation in the region.
In West Monroe Louisiana the crash killed Mr and Mrs A P Golden of Columbia and Elmer Madden of Simsboro with N A Clinton severely injured. The car plunged into a deep drainage ditch after a high speed run and may have drowned after entering water swollen by heavy rains. Madden reportedly drove the auto.
In Tientsin area a Chinese village Wuchinghsien saw 133 drug addicts thieves and others executed within 24 hours under new anti drug laws and morality codes. Officials claimed executions followed anti drug statutes while Peiping authorities cited other counts for the condemnations.
A sweeping midwinter storm travels east as blizzards end in the Midwest and travel slows along the Atlantic. Snow and ice reshape travel from the Dakotas to New England with several rescues reported in California and Montana. Forecasters promise warmer temps and more snow predicted for tomorrow.
Weatherman H. T. Coleman predicts mild temperatures for the coming days with no moisture or snow expected. Last night's low was 20 degrees and Saturday night’s barometer reading fell to 14 degrees.
Associated Press reports a deep cold snap across Texas with a seasonal low of 21 degrees. Frigid conditions displaced recent mild weather. Weather disruptions affected daily life and travel as the cold persisted in several regions.
In Big Piney Wyoming on January 3 Dr. H D Port state veterinarian said elk in the Jackson Hole herd of more than 20 000 head could not catch scabies from infected cattle though Oscar Beck a local cattleman and banker reported grazing near diseased livestock and expressed concern.
In New York a small, drenched crowd greeted Lawrence B. Simpson, the American seaman who confessed in a Berlin court to attempting to overthrow the Nazi regime. The rain spoiled the hero's welcome planned for his arrival on the President Roosevelt, while larger protests occurred in other American cities during his release period. Simpson, a Seattle native described as a blond communist enthusiast fluent in German, was the only passenger aboard the liner. He had been sent home by the American Consul but refused to leave the ship.
Federal agents and state police rushed from Tacoma to Shelton after a coupe delivered a kidnapping warning to mill watchman G R Grubbe. The watchman described a middle aged man in a dark hat issuing orders and warning Dr W W Maltson that everything is well.
Mexico promises not to export American bought aircraft or other war equipment to Spain without consent. The foreign office said Mexico will not act as intermediary for foreign-origin war materials and will respect national permissions, a stance reported by the American embassy in Mexico City.
Madison January 3 President Glenn Frank failed to postpone a public hearing on charges of mismanaging University of Wisconsin affairs as regents move ahead January 6 with the inquiry. Harold M Wilkie regents president and other board members rebuked Frank for delaying the proceedings.
In Vatican City on January 3 Pope Pius XI bestowed a special blessing on Dennis Cardinal Dougherty of Philadelphia papal legate to the International Eucharistic Congress at Manila and wished him Godspeed. The ailing pope, resting with leg pain, spoke for about thirty minutes after Mass as Vatican officials described his condition as unchanged.
In Hagerstown Maryland the owned cat Tabby vanished three weeks ago and was presumed dead. Mrs. Forward Moats daughter heard a faint meow from a 75 foot well and found the cat perched near the waterline. A milk-filled basket lowered into the well brought the cat to the surface where she ate and slept.
Marie Alperowitz, 25, fell from a Madison Square Hotel roof to midair when her leg snagged a metal band around a drain pipe on the ninth floor. Assistant manager Frank Loftus pulled her back through a window. She survived but with a broken leg and possible internal injuries. A sealed letter to brother Sam Alperowitz was found in her room.
The Latter Day Saints Church announces a colonization project to settle 75 needy families on a 3000 acre communal tract in the Bluewater Valley near Gallup New Mexico. The land was bought by the church and will be resold to settlers on easy terms at an estimated cost around 79000 dollars.
West Texas fair and warmer in north and east areas on Monday with Tuesday mostly fair. New Mexico fair on Monday and Tuesday with slightly warmer conditions in the northeast portion.
Two Guymon women Ada Craehood and Mary Salyer were killed when the Golden State Limited plowed broadside into their car at Main Street crossing as they returned from Kansas City. Witnesses said Ada Orahood tried to veer away but the train struck the coupe, leaving the car demolished and bodies unidentifiable. Funeral plans pending. Craehood is survived by husband and Bradshaw family. Salyer taught in Guymon schools for eight years.
Relief crews tally 37 highway workers dead after a dynamite explosion on the Berampejillo El Palmito highway. Three men at a nearby supper camp were gravely injured. Only one of 18 men in a dynamite tent survived.
Oklahoma's House delegation debated voting as a unit on Monday as Democrats pick a floor leader between Sam Rayburn and John O'Connor. Most favor Rayburn. only Jack Nichols and Phil Ferguson showed support for O'Connor.
Hollywood reports the film star Ross Alexander was found dead in a barn hay loft from a self inflicted gunshot. He died about a year after his first wife Aleta Freile killed herself amid career frustrations. Detective Lt Giese ruled the death suicidal.
