James E Ferguson, husband of Governor elect Miriam A Ferguson, told an agricultural conference in Dallas the coming administration will back a state sales tax to fund government and relieve the tax burden on land. He noted schools must be funded and criticized tax exempt securities, comparing to gold standard rhetoric.
Claude C. Wild of the Independent Petroleum Association of Texas denounces the new market demand proration order as futile and costly. He warns it will collapse and fuel oil racketeering, saying tighter production limits cannot be enforced and will invite illegal taking of oil. Continued on Page 10 Col. 4.

Virgil Lee Pond aged one, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Pond of Pleasant Valley, died after falling into a stock watering tank near his rural home. He was pronounced dead at Northwest Texas Hospital after frantic efforts to revive him failed. Funeral services will be held at Boxwell Funeral Chapel with burial at Llano Cemetery.

In San Antonio, Mayor Chambers proclaims the city out of debt as the back unbonded indebtedness is set to be wiped out next week after tax collections.

Potter County on its first full day of business trimmed 6997 from deputy salaries for 24 posts and axed the county engineer and county judge secretary roles. Duties of the engineer shift to the surveyor with no staff increase. Additional salary cuts for 1934 deputies are anticipated as remaining offices are reviewed. Sheriff post allocations listed, with chief deputy at 2400 and civil deputy at 1620 annually.

Peiping report says the Chinese city of Shanhaikwan was captured by Japanese after a two hour battle in which 500 Chinese troops were killed. Tanks were used and the south wall of the city was flattened by shelling. Chinese regrouped a mile southwest and prepared to resist. Japanese leaders said pursuing soldiers did not intend to advance far along the Mukden railroad. Civilians suffered heavily.
In Austin on January 3 James V Allred the attorney general filed a motion in the Supreme Court to dismiss the Danciger Oil and Refining Company of Texas appeal from a Court of Civil Appeals ruling upholding Texas Railroad Commission oil proration orders The motion argues the case is moot as the orders have expired and laws have changed affecting oil production and waste prevention duties of the Railway Commission.
